I grew up in the Mennonite church, and from a young age learned to quilt, and was surrounded by a range of quilts, including traditional Amish quilt patterns, which I loved for their use of color, and dark backgrounds. This quilt is based on the Roman Stripes pattern - made with foundation piecing, arranged on my living room floor, and hand quilted with a rainbow of thread. While it's one of my favorite quilts, it's never found the right home, so I was delighted to be able to donate it to GSAFE to support their work. As a non binary student, my school's GSA was a much-needed safe place.

This is a traditional quilt block, a LeMoyne Star, made with many scraps of fabric. I am inspired by using up the bits and pieces of leftover fabric from projects that I've already done. While hand quilting, I enjoy spending time with each fabric and appreciating the fabrics in new ways as they come together in a new piece. As an MMSD teacher, I am honored to donate my work to GSAFE to support the well-being of my students.

This quilt is made with love and support of the LGBTQ+ community, and will be donated to GSAFE's fundraiser in Memory of Andrew Cray, Ellen's step-brother. Andrew passed away from cancer in 2014, and was an incredibly intelligent, humble, and multi-talented trans man who dedicated his work to help humans, especially the LGBTQ+ community.

We created this quilt to help resist the discrimination of the LGBTQ+ community, and to support GSAFE which supports Wisconsin's LGBTQ+ youth.

Artist Statement:

I have friends and family in the LGBTQ+ community who deserve to live and love in peace. The quote on the quilt originates from the Greek poet Dinos Christianopolus. I first heard it several years ago when a club at East High School in Madison created a shirt with this phrase and a rainbow flower with a solidarity fist in the center as a fundraiser for DACA students. Versions of the phrase were also used in protests in Mexico after 43 students were disappeared in 2013 as well as in protests around the US on immigration issues. It seemed appropriate to this year's theme and was the inspiration for the quilt. This is the first time I've designed a quilt completely without a pattern. It didn't quite come out the same as the original somewhat hazy concept in my head - particularly trying to shade the background to a darker blue.

Description:

Each of the colored squares in this quilt are made of four triangles made from ombre fabric which gradually transitions from light to dark. The way in which the subtle changes in the color come together create strong, vibrant, rich diamonds set on an off-white background. All of the fabrics have a spattering of gold, as if a little magical gold dust was sprinkled onto the finished quilt. When we come together we are strong, vibrant, rich and yes- sometimes a little sparkly.

Description:

A modern quilt based on the traditional "flying geese" block made in a bold ombre. According to legend, a safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging outside. These quilts were embedded with a kind code so that by reading the shapes and motifs sewn into the design, an enslaved person on the run could know the area's immediate dangers or even where to head next. The Flying Geese block was a signal to follow the direction of the geese flying as they migrated north in the spring. Today we have negative forces coming at us from all directions. The Flying Geese in this quilt are pushing back, a reminder to stay strong and rebel!

Description:

The 1920's were a time of change, in prosperity, music and politics. Fashion and art also went through a dramatic change with an emphasis on clean geometric lines and on metals/jewel colors. This quilt pattern is called Carbide, named for the Carbon and Carbide building in Chicago. Gold and ruby red were chosen to accent the black and white background.

Description:

Log cabin quilts date back to the civil war era. It has been said that these quilts may have been made to support the Union army, the log cabin representing the home where Abraham Lincoln grew up. This quilt is an example of a "half log cabin" because the square is in the corner rather than in the center of the block. By tradition, a red square is meant to symbolize the "hearth" - a place warm, welcoming and home.

Description:

My sister picked up fabrics that were donated to GSAFE. I had fun combining those with fabrics I already had to make my version of the Basic Grey pattern, "Heart Strings". Machine quilted by Quigley's Quilts, the fabrics are cotton with a bamboo batting. Matching standard size pillowcases are included as well! For fun, I entered this in the Colorado State Fair this year where it received really strong ratings on it's visual impact. Throw in a couple of color catchers for the first wash.

The colors in this one remind me of textile prints in both of my grandmothers homes when I was growing up. They taught me to create and to find different reasons to do so. I have learned over the years that, for me, my love of creating brings joy, contentment, sorrow, laughter, connection and so much more. Creating as a form of resistance allows space for all of our emotions and feelings, especially when our creating is for a shared cause. I hope that this piece reminds the new owner that love is always worth our voices, our tie, and our collective energy.

Description:

Full item name - "Grandma and I made this Flower Garden". My grandmother, Irene Greenwood of Wisconsin Dells, made these Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt blocks in the early 1930's. She made them by hand, using English paper piecing. When she gave up quilting in the 1970's, she gave me a stack of 100 of these blocks, each one different. I machine appliqued these antique blocks onto reproduction fabric and created the pieced shashing. The result combines old and new, and pays tribute to my grandmother's exquisite hand work.

Most of my quilts are donated to local hospice and quilts for kids. This kit was gifted to me after the original owner could not complete it. A friend gave me a flyer [about the GSAFE auction] knowing I usually donate my work.

This is my third time contributing to this auction. I enjoy making brightly colored quilts for such a great cause.

Description:

After 11 years in Thailand, I wanted to start making quilts with Thai themes. This quilt block is modeled after a fish. It is a common handicraft amongst Thais using woven palm leaves. It is machine quilted with a Thai Lotus Flower motif. While not perfect, it does emulate the individual dedication to each flower found in many Thai temples. This quilt can be machine washed in warm water. Promptly remove and hang dry to avoid any color run. This quilt has already been washed in an unscented laundry detergent. As the maker, I would like to express my deep gratitude on bidding on this quilt. As a person who identifies as part of the LGBTQ community it is of great importance to support the youth today in our schools by providing a safe environment, something I could only wish had been available to me when I was a youth. This pattern is an Abraham J. Martin original and I was delighted to create and make this pattern for the 2025 GSAFE quilt auction.

Flower Power! Rise! Resist! Persist!

Description:

I chose a floral-themed quilt pattern, using vintage floral print fabric, to include the PRIDE/LGBTQ+ colors. Flowers represent nature's creation, rebirth, resistance, and persistence in the face of all that nature throws at them. I cut all of the individual pieces, then pieced and quilted the quilt on my domestic sewing machine. I do straightline quilting reminiscent of my grandmother's handmade antique quilts.

My sister, Lynn Hilgers, began participating in this auction several years ago. Learning about the mission of this organization inspired me to make and donate a quilt last year. I am inspired to continue doing so to support and defend the rights and safety of all LGBTQ+ individuals, especially youth in schools, who need all the support and protection their schools can offer in this currently very trying political and social climate.

This colorful quilt celebrates the beauty of God's creation through a rainbow of batik fabrics arranged in diagonal movement across the classic rail fence design. Each piece was stitched with love and care, forming a patchwork that symbolizes hope, promise, and joy.

This was a very fun quilt to make, especially as I am a novice quilter. I was attracted to the pattern because of the stained-glass look. I am so happy that GSAFE is here in the Madison area. My partner and I (same sex couple) raised two kids in the Madison schools and we have first-hand knowledge of how difficult it can be to create an accepting school environment where all kids can thrive. So three cheers to GSAFE for their work!

I've used my favorite quilt style - Rail Fence - to make a rendition of the Philadelphia Pride Flag with fun "eye-spy" fabrics including frogs, puffins, and more.

This small wall quilt was created in response to the current political environment and the demonization of minority and marginalized populations. Joy IS an act of resistance, and we must continue to oppose authoritarianism, while embracing hope of a kinder, more inclusive, future.

Description:

This is a lovely crib quilt with three panels of sweet animals (lions, elephants, octopi!) interspersed w/complimentary fabrics. It is machine pieced and hand quilted in a simple style to reflect the overall elements of the pattern. The back is flannel adding to the comfy overall vibe.

I was attending a family gathering in WI recently and was made aware of this Auction and the invaluable work of GSAFE. As a parent of two transgender kids, I am particularly concerned about the current political environment and was so thrilled to find this avenue to contribute to the resistance! It also gave me an opportunity to stop by Barn Door Quilts in Sturgeon Bay and chat up this event only to be so pleased that they are also big contributors to this auction.

Description:

This quilt for older kids began with a panel for a cloth kids' book. I cut out the individual pages, then added scrappy border strips in a Courthouse Steps pattern to frame each page. Blue sashing and borders pulled it all together. The fun blue print on the back came from the sale bin at Blue Bar Quilts. This quilt would be delightful on a wall or as a comfy nest on the floor to learn colors and things to ride.

After making 6 bright scrap quilts, I had lots of leftover pieces. I started putting them together into stripes, then chose black to make the colors pop! A cozy flannel back and scrappy binding finished it off.
