This hat is made with 100% Merino wool by Teton Yarn from Knit on Pearl in Jackson, WY. We stopped in this shop after a long drive through the Tetons. The color is called "Wyoming Sunset" and recalled the colors of our Teton drive. The pattern reminds me of the tall Tetons and winding roads. Sized as an adult medium/Large and fits as a slouchy hat.
12.5 inches tall, 16 inches circumference unstretched, 23 inches stretched.
Cowboy Yarn Crawl hat #5/7. Last summer, my sister and I road tripped through Wyoming for the Cowboy Yarn Crawl. I picked up a skein of yarn at each participating shop. Each hat is infused with our sister energy. I join this auction in honor of all the LGBTQIA+ youth in Wisconsin. May you be seen and loved for the marvelous person you are!
This hat is made with 100% Merino wool by Blackbird Sycamore from The Yarn and The Tale in Rock Springs, WY. I chose a pattern with subtle vertical stripes to highlight the beautiful, variegated colors. Sized as an adult medium/larger.
8 inches tall with brim folded, 10 inches tall without brim folded, 18 inches circumference unstretched, 26 inches stretched
Cowboy Yarn Crawl hat #6/7. Last summer my sister and I road tripped through Wyoming for the Cowboy Yarn Crawl. I picked up a skein of yarn at each participating shop. This hat is made with 100% Merino wool yarn by Briar Patch Fibre from Swanky Mountain in Gilette, WY. This was the first skein I bought. The combination of the beautiful color and the indication on the yarn label that Briar Patch is LGBTQIA+ affirming inspired the idea to turn my yarn crawl purchases into hats for the GSAFE auction. I chose a pattern to highlight the beautiful blue color and its variegation. The yarn feels amazing to the touch and was a joy to knit with. Sized as an adult large but could fit on a smaller head as a slouchy hat.
11 inches tall, 16 inches circumference unstretched, 24 inches stretched.
Cowboy Yarn Crawl hat #1/7. Last summer my sister and I road tripped through Wyoming for the Cowboy Yarn Crawl. I picked up a skein of yarn at each participating shop. This hat is made with 100% Wool by Tronstad Ranch from Cowgirl Yarn in Laramie, WY. This was our last stop, where we completed the yarn crawl. While it was the last skein I bought, it was the first hat I knit, because I immediately knew what pattern it needed. The yarn color is called "balsam", and I picked a pattern that reminded me of fir trees. This one is my sister's favorite. Sized as an adult medium/large.
10 inches tall, 16 inches circumference unstretched, 22 inches stretched.
Cowboy Yarn Crawl hat #7/7. Last summer my sister and I road tripped through Wyoming for the Cowboy Yarn Crawl. I picked up a skein of yarn at each participating shop. This hat is made with 100% Merino wool by Polka Dot Sheep from Fiber House in Sheridan, WY. This one is my personal favorite as I love the color, and I love knitting cables. The combination of the yarn and cables makes the hat soft and squishy. Sized as an adult medium/large.
9 inches all, 16 inches circumference unstretched, 25 inches stretched
Cowboy Yarn Crawl hat #3/7. Last summer my sister and I road tripped through Wyoming for the Cowboy Yarn Crawl. I picked up a skein of yarn at each participating shop. This hat is made with 100% Merino wool by Polka Dot Sheep from Knit on Pearl in Jackson, WY. The shop before this one was unexpectedly closed, but the owner of Knit on Pearl graciously gave us credit for visiting the other shop in addition to hers, so I bought two skeins from her. I used a reversible pattern in honor of the flexibility we needed to complete the crawl. Sometimes change is good. Wear this hat with either side out, and change it whenever you want. Sized as an adult medium/large.
9 inches tall without brim folded, 7 inches with brim folded, 16 inches circumference unstretched, 22 inches stretched

This hat is made with 35% Mountain Merino wool, 30% Alpaca, and 35% Tencel yarn by and from Mountain Meadow in Buffalo, WY. We toured their yarn mill and got to feed and pet their sheep, Yarnold and Lambert. The pattern is called St. John's Wort after the flower. The chunky yarn will keep your head warm. Sized as an adult small/medium.
8.5 inches tall, 16 inches circumference unstretched, 20 inches stretch

This blanket is knit with lopi yarns from Iceland. Lopi is very warm! I started knitting this during a polar vortex!!! The blanket is several shades of brown and gray with a few green and ivory accents. Care instructions: hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild soap or special wool wash. Avoid agitation, wringing or twisting. After washing, gently squeeze out water by rolling the blanket in a towel. Reshape the blanket and lay it out flat to dry.
62" x 76"
This shawl has four sections and is knit with four colors. Each section is unique so this wrap is a bold fashion statement. The yarn is sport weight, warm but not heavy. Wrap yourself in love! Care instructions from Briggs and Little: wash by hand in lukewarm water with a mild soap. Squeeze water through garment rather than rubbing. Rubbing will cause the wool to felt. Rinse twice in lukewarm water. Squeeze out as much water as possible before laying garment to dry. Do not dry in direct sunlight or with artificial heat.

Each year, my GSAFE donation starts with searching for the perfect pattern and yarn for the project. This year, I selected the pattern "More Than the Month" by Skeinanigans (Ellie, she/they), available on Ravelry at: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/more-than-the-month. I was able to find most of the rainbow colors using locally-dyed yarn from Knit Circus (https://knitcircus.com/), but the special yarn with cream, blue, and pink representing the trans colors was more difficult to find. They ultimately were purchased from an independent dyer in North Carolina (Blue Barn Fibers, https:/bluebarnfibers.com/) who is able to care for her disabled child through having a home business. From start to finish, this shawl has been designed and resourced from people who support the LGBTQIA+ community, and it was knit with warm thoughts of love and support for the community supported by GSAFE.

I'm a transgender man who recently moved to Madison. I've been so moved and supported by the LGBTQ+ community in this city, but my heart breaks knowing that so many LGBTQ+ youth don't have access to the community that can help them thrive.
Thrifted Madison Forward shirt modified into a colorful poncho. Hand knit panels in vibrant rainbow yarn makes this a floaty, open statement piece. The original t-shirt was size Large but this garment as finished can accommodate a wide range of sizes-see dimensions. Superwash yarn/wool acrylic blend makes this machine washable (on delicate) and able to dry on low heat.
35.5" X 27"
As an avid knitter I'm always looking for ways to use my craft for good! I have been so impressed by the community GSAFE brings together, and their work is more crucially important than ever. I contribute items to multiple silent auctions but GSAFE's may be my favorite. I love breaking out colorful yarns and bold patterns for this auction!

The creation of this hat was the result of a special confluence of the theme of this year's auction and some yarn I found while looking for yarn for the shawl I also knit for the GSAFE auction. Independent dyer Holly Madison at Blue Barn Fibers, https://bluebarnfiber.com/, in North Carolina created her spring collection based on poems by poet Andrea Gibson. The colorway that I loved, and which matched the theme for the Auction, which was "Creation is Louder than Destruction", based on the final stanza of Andrea's poem "Yellow Bird." Picasso said he'd paint with his own wet tongue on the dusty floor of a jail cell if he had to. We have to create; it is the only thing louder than destruction; it is the only chance the bars are gonna break. Our hands full of colour reaching towards the sky- a brush stroke in the dark. It is not too late. That starry night- it is not yet dry." Although Andrea has now left us, her words provide us with reminders of the power of creation to change what is to what should be, and the work continues. The words on the hat read "Create + Resist+" around the hat. I designed the hat, so there is no pattern available.

As an educator, I have seen first-hand the damaging effects of exclusion and the healing effects of inclusion for LGBTQ+ youth and adults. In today's political climate, I believe that each person needs to do as much as possible to support all marginalized folx, so I appreciate the GSAFE mission. I love to knit socks, so this seemed like a perfect way to help make the world a little bit better!
