Martin has been named HELP USA's 2025 Art of Resilience Artist, a role in which she will collaborate with HELP on a series of initiatives to raise awareness about the traumas and challenges faced by homeless and formerly homeless individuals. Martin will create a permanent, commissioned artwork for the lobby of Glenmore, the future home of HELP Women's Center, a transitional housing facility for women opening in Fall 2025 in East New York, Brooklyn.

Martin's solo exhibitions include Intimate Whispers at Vardan Gallery in Los Angeles (2024), NEW/NOW: Shantell Martin at the New Britain Museum of American Art (2020), and Words and Lines at the Denver Art Museum (2019). She has also participated in significant group exhibitions such as Trespassing at Christie's in New York (2022) and BEYOND THE STREETS on Paper (2021). Her work is housed in prominent collections, including those of the British Government Art Collection, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Bata Shoe Museum, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Whitney Museum.

Beyond the gallery space, Martin's public art installations can be found in major cultural hubs, including Rockefeller Center and The Oculus in New York. Her large-scale murals and site-specific works have become landmarks, bringing art into public life in ways that are both interactive and deeply personal. She has also collaborated with institutions such as the New York City Ballet, where she incorporated her signature aesthetic into stage design, and with global brands like Tiffany & Co., Puma, and Kendrick Lamar, expanding the scope of contemporary art through cross-disciplinary innovation.

Martin's influence extends into academia and research, where she has served as an adjunct professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and as a visiting scholar and research affiliate at MIT Media Lab. She has also contributed to climate activism as an advisory board member of the Climate Museum in New York.

Her artistic practice is rooted in an exploration of self and society, often incorporating performance and movement into her work. She sees drawing as a language-one that is intuitive, expressive, and unbound by convention. Whether on canvas, in digital media, or on monumental architectural surfaces, Martin's lines tell stories of resilience, identity, and human experience, challenging viewers to see themselves reflected in the ever-evolving landscapes of her work.

The Red Umbrella, 2025

mixed media on canvas, 48 x 36 in

It is truly remarkable to find an artist who is as prolific with his paintbrush as Shakespeare was with his pen. Like Shakespeare's literary contributions, a similar impact is evidenced by Bernard's artistic masterpieces. His passionate love of hues, shapes, and images resonates in the hearts and minds of all who view his work. The brilliancy of Bernard's work has catapulted him to enormous success and recognition as a renowned African American artist. As a visionary, Bernard uses his art to speak to the world. He is deft in his ability to capture the beauty, joy, emotion, and most importantly, the vibrant colors of life.

Bernard's artwork is truthful and personifies the African American experience in all its magnificent life forms. With a brushstroke, his artwork conveys a statement- "This is!" Bernard was enormously well respected as both a Fine and Commercial Artist in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. After earning a degree from Benedict College, Bernard later pursued a Master's degree in Fine Art. Bernard also traveled to Detroit, Michigan and finally to New York City.

Frustrated as a starving artist and formerly homeless, Bernard diverted his career and went into the film industry as a Scenic Artist. He worked on more than thirty major motion pictures and still continues to do film work in his spare time. Upon the completion of two very successful films, Strictly Business and Malcolm X, Bernard went back into the studio. He moved to New Jersey and opened Gallery 61, a successful establishment in the heart of the Village of South Orange.

His work is in numerous private collections including Magic Johnson, Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, Queen Latifah, Coretta Scott King, Myrlie Evers, Betty Shabazz, Steve Harvey, Julius Irving, among other notable collections.

"In physics, redshift occurs when a heavenly body is rapidly rushing away. Adam Pape's recent photographs, which view New York through a scrim of red and pink roses, convey a similar sensation of life receding at the very moment it is being experienced.

This series, from 2017 through summer 2020, took off from a group of pictures that Pape made of rosebushes growing by a police station in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, where he was living at the time. From there, the project evolved into a kind of scavenger hunt, with Pape roaming the city on a horticultural search for flowers that could occupy the foreground while, like a mannerist painter, he zeroed his camera in on what was occurring in the middle distance.

Lurid and moody, exaggerated yet naturalistic, these photographs, which Pape often shot at twilight, evoke a cityscape that is both fantastic and recognizable. It is as if the artist had stared hard at what was around him, shut his eyes, and allowed the afterimage, distilled and heightened, to register on his consciousness and then, as if in a darkroom, develop slowly and inexorably into being."

Artist's Statement

I work with elements of Taoism and specifically Wu Wei, the art of nondoing. Each shape feels intentional yet just out of my grasp, a slippery in-betweenness, something short of being too far or not enough.

In these works, I focused on unfolding my visual language, telling a story of communion. The white and ivory black hold space while soft pastels and neons dance along the walls of their maze. While seemingly similar in ethos, the physical act of painting these shapes is a practice in patience, in immersion, with each reflecting a different instinct of 'play.' The colors speak to each other, active yet docile. The lines hold each other, and they all remember to breathe.
