As you tour the reservoir, he can share tips on accomplishing a Big Year, utilizing rare bird alerts, and getting the most out of birding when you only have 30 minutes or so. Tim will take you around the reservoir in a van making stops along the shore and on the dam. 213 different species have been documented on eBird at this site. Expect a variety of raptors, waterfowl, and hopefully some local & migrating land birds!

Guided trip for 2-4 in Clear Creek County in search of the elusive White-tailed Ptarmigan. This full day (approx. 6 hour) trip will be to the top of Guanella Pass in late October or early November of 2025, with a focused effort to spot these birds on their wintering grounds. There is no guarantee you will see any of these secretive birds, but your guide, Sarah Albright of Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, knows where to look. Photographers are welcome!

Sarah is the Grasslands Program Manager at Bird Conservancy of the Rockies where she oversees on-the-ground grasslands conservation delivery in northern Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Prior to her current position, she completed her M.S. at CSU conducting a burrowing owl population assessment with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and partial funding by Denver Audubon's Lois Webster Fund. Before grasslands, Sarah spent 3 summers completing Rosy-Finch and White-tailed Ptarmigan surveys across the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. She is intimately familiar with alpine flora and fauna. Striding across snowfields and rock scree squinting through binoculars to count rosy-finches and ptarmigan and observing their eating habits kickstarted her passion for conservation.

Join Sarah on a day in our mountains as she shares her love of alpine birds and knowledge of birding research. While wandering the tundra, she can also share the story of how mountain birds are riding the "escalator to extinction" as well as her personal interest in identifying the impacts of climate change on high altitude species and what steps the scientific community can take to preserve the habitat and ranges of at-risk species.

Participants will work with Sarah to choose a weekend date in October/early November with Sarah's mutual availability.

Learn about Barn Owl behavior, diet, habitat, and conservation efforts from an experienced ornithologist. The banding process involves weighing, measuring, and placing a lightweight, harmless band on the owl's leg. As Scott carefully retrieves the owl, you'll be able to see their intricate feather patterns, sharp talons, and captivating eyes up close. This is a rare opportunity to experience these elusive birds in a way few people ever do!

Scott Rashid is an ornithologist, researcher, author, and wildlife rehabilitator based in Colorado. He is the founder and director of the Colorado Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute (CARRI), where he studies and works to protect various bird species, particularly owls and other raptors. With years of experience in bird banding, research, and rehabilitation, Scott has dedicated his career to understanding avian behavior, habitat use, and conservation. He has published several books on owls, birds of prey, and small bird species, providing valuable insights into their ecology and challenges. Scott just recently received the 2025 World Owl Hall of Fame Champion of Owls Award for his work.

Experience to take place in May or June of 2025. The specific date and timing of this trip will be arranged with Scott depending on when the owls return to the nest.

Fire Rock Ranch - Morning Bird Walk and Brunch for 8

Join Master Birder Laurie Duke for a 2 hour walk followed by a generous brunch at the house. Tour around the barn, corrals, and riparian creek area of this special property recently set aside in a conservation easement with the Colorado Cattlemen Land Trust.

Some of the expected birds will be swallows, kingbirds, bluebirds, warblers, sparrows, woodpeckers, raptors, finches, and maybe a few surprises. Wear long pants and hiking shoes for walking through tall grass and creek crossings. The total distance will be approximately half a mile. Don't forget your binoculars!

Afterwards a bird walk, you will be treated to a hearty farm brunch under the shade of a large cottonwood where you can continue watching birds at the feeders or in the trees.
