Judy agrees, adding, "They ended up at the shelter through no fault of their own-some come in confused, all of them break my heart." But at HSSC, no animal is forgotten. Judy has cozy nights with shelter dogs, husband, and little Doug dog all piled onto one bed-crowded, but filled with warmth. These sleepovers help the shelter dogs get a cozy night, love, and a break from the stress and noise of the shelter.

To them, animals teach us what love truly means. "They are so forgiving," Judy reflects. "Humans could learn a lot from them." Karen nods in agreement. "Regardless of what brought them here, they give back so much love in return."

Among the countless animals she has worked with, one story remains deeply embedded in her heart. A cat named Goose arrived at the shelter, so terrified that he refused to come out of his enclosure. His fear manifested in aggression, making it nearly impossible for anyone to approach him. Laura, who had never needed protective gloves before, found herself slipping them on for the first time.

Taking him to the adoption room, she witnessed a transformation nothing short of miraculous. "It was like a Jekyll and Hyde situation," she recalls. "In the enclosure, he was terrified and lashed out. But once in my arms, against my chest, he melted." With patience and unwavering dedication, Laura worked with him, gently encouraging him to trust again. In time, he went from a frightened, hissing cat to one who allowed gentle pets and now waits for his forever home.

We believe Goose, came to us with a past too painful to comprehend. This boy has a black BB like pellet that we couldn't remove during his dental to remove his fractured teeth. Though initially wary, Goose's resilience shone through. Laura has spent extra time with him, sitting on the ground, allowing him to rest against her heartbeat. "It provided a safety structure for him," she explains. "He could see the door, he knew he wasn't trapped, and for the first time, he felt safe."

As Valentine's Day approaches, Laura reflects on the unconditional love animals give. "Why wouldn't we try to return it?" she asks. To her, love isn't about material things-it's about connection, trust, and the willingness to give a second chance. Whether it's nursing a scared animal back to trust or celebrating the joy of adoption, Laura's mission is clear: to share love in its purest form.

When asked what she would say to encourage others to donate, she doesn't hesitate. "Share the love. Give that unconditional love, because there's always another one waiting."

Every day, Claudia sees the faces of the animals who arrive at the shelter-some lost, some abandoned, all waiting for someone to love them. "My heart breaks for them," she says. "If they had a human somewhere, that animal has got to feel so lost. And for the ones who have been at the shelter for an extreme amount of time… the shelter is designed to be a short stop, not a place to live. I wish I could get each and every one of them a home."

Claudia believes deeply in making sure every shelter pet feels loved while they wait. "The staff and volunteers do an incredible job, but it's important for the animals to feel love so they don't become isolated," she explains. "We want them to stay expressive and relatable to their future humans, whether it's a reunion or a brand-new home."

Through fundraising, Claudia hopes to not only raise money but also awareness. "The needs of the shelter are ongoing," she says. "People can contribute at any time, not just when there's a special event." For Claudia, pets are more than just animals-they're family. "I don't have kids, so they are truly my fur babies. I give them my heart," she says. Her husband, Chris, and their two beloved cats, Miles and Jameson, are always there to greet her, comfort her, and make her smile. "They help me forget a bad day, heal from grief, and give me reasons to laugh. I love making their days special-whether it's through treats, new toys, or visits with Nana."

She knows firsthand how deeply animals can connect with people. One of her most memorable moments was with her shelter cat, Horatio (also known as Tio). "When my dad passed away, I was heartbroken. I was lying in bed, and Horatio came to me. He knew I was sad-I could feel it. As I was telling him why, he placed his paw in my hand, like he was holding it, and licked a tear from my face. He got me."

To the shelter pets still waiting for their families, Claudia offers reassurance. "Every time I'm at the shelter, I talk to them. I ask how their day is going, and I tell them their human is coming soon. To be patient. To enjoy the volunteers and staff, because they love them, too. That they won't always be living in a cage or kennel. And while they are, we will give them the best we can."

For Claudia, love isn't reserved for just one day a year. "Some people call Valentine's Day a Hallmark holiday-I don't care. If it gives me another opportunity to spread love, I'll take it. But we shouldn't need a holiday to do that."
