78 (Yauco) is part of a series of paintings (Campamento, 2018) that convey the increasing liquidation of Puerto Rican land to private economic interests in light of the archipelago's economic struggles exacerbated by the passing of Hurricanes María (2017) and Fiona (2023). Each painting of this 78-part series, becomes a stand-in for one of Puerto Rico's municipalities, and makes up a larger whole image, which is sectioned and fragmented with the sale of each tile until nothing is left.

Artist Bio:

Eric Rivera Barbeito (b. 1994) is a visual artist and woodworker that utilizes a multidisciplinary practice to dissect Puerto Rico's social-political relationship with the United States. A native of Bayamón, Puerto Rico, he received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2017. Rivera Barbeito has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Vermont Studio Center, ACRE, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. He has been included in group exhibitions at Towson University, School 33, Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia, Torpedo Factory Art Center, and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and has exhibited individually at Monaco in St. Louis, MO."

Artist Bio:

I have been active in the arts my entire life. I graduated from Longwood University with a degree in Art Education. My interest in painting began in my mid 20's and in my early 30's I studied watercolor. I exhibited in several galleries throughout the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia areas. After working in a gallery frame shop , I began my own framing /art business at age 41. I worked as a vendor for Nordstrom Dept stores on a National level for 13 years selling my watercolor framed prints I created as a product. . In my 50's I studied oil painting., clay, mixed media, and sculpture . At age 60, I retired from the commercial businesses and began to make art full time. Represented by Quirk Gallery.

Artist Bio:

Emma Knight studied art at the University of Mary Washington. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia she spent 20 years in Savannah, Georgia before returning to her hometown. She has won several exhibition prizes in her 30 years of painting and has also been included in the prestigious State Department's Art in Embassies program and ArtFields in Lake City, SC.
There is no mistaking Knight's specific artistic style. Windswept, puffy, organic shapes fill the canvas and take the place of foliage, leaving the viewer with a sense of curiosity and wonder. Her paintings reveal an atmospheric sensibility. Line, shape and color work in concert to evoke the mood of a place and time rather than clear and detached details. In her newest works, her abstraction has gone a step further. No longer representing actual space, the organic structures still conjure sensations of life. They recall the petals of chrysanthemum or carnation. Or perhaps their squiggly shapes suggest creatures found in the waters of a lake. Artist Bio:

Sam Skrimpz is a trans masc artist from south Louisiana, now based in Richmond, Virginia. Through evocative murals and paintings, he explores gender identity and the realms of the mystical. Skrimpz's work is deliberate and loud; through saturated colors and concise symbols, he crafts dynamic scenes and conjures narratives playful in both concept and interpretation. Birds are a frequent subject of the artist - sometimes a subtle background, or an explicit main character - and birds often depict the journey to freedom and personal liberation taken by gender nonconforming people. Skrimpz also uses his art practice to bridge connection with community by teaching workshops and classes, where he co-creates murals with students based on their identities and weaves a narrative together based on the space and time that all are present in the space. Overall, Sam Skrimpz's work is an amalgamation of personal tales, meditations, as well an invitation to come on a journey; a visual exploration of gender, nature, and a celebration of the multitudes we all contain.

Artist Bio:

My paintings are containers of time with overlapping transparent layers of color forming a whole. Natural organic and manmade architectural, geometric shapes and space vie for dominance. My process sometimes produces unexpected contours like the curve of the macrocosm, which is bent by mass and energy. Inspiration is found in the everyday beauty of manmade and the power of the natural world. Ray has worked with encaustic since 1986, receiving a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston. She then attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, where she studied with Agnes Martin and Joseph Campbell as well as completed Post-baccalaureate studies in Fine Arts at VCU in Virginia. She has consistently exhibited on a national scale and lives and works in Richmond, VA.

This painting was inspired by a quote from C.S. Lewis, suggesting that if we find ourselves with desires that nothing in this world can satisfy, we might have been made for another world. This idea resonates with me as I navigate life, carrying what often feels like multiple bags filled with desires, hopes, and dreams. Over time, these bags become heavier and sometimes burdensome. Thankfully in the midst of these, there is still beauty in the here and now. These glimpses of joy create in me a longing for an even greater wholeness and beauty. I am left joyful, but still wanting. This explains my depiction of the blue flower, which symbolizes spiritual longing.

Artist Bio

Curtis Newkirk Jr. is an artist from Northern Virginia who resides in Richmond. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University and has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions, winning many awards throughout his career. His award-winning work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including the New American Paintings 2020 South Issue and the 2020 documentary The Builder. Recently, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts acquired one of his pieces. Curtis primarily uses oil and acrylic on wood to create deeply moving, dynamic, figurative paintings that communicate themes of freedom, dignity, courage, and conviction. Through his work, he aims to encourage everyone to think more about the experiences that build character, inspire hope, and ignite our imaginations, all contributing to a perpetual state of becoming more human.

Artist Bio:

Natalie Colleen Gates graduated Cum Laude from VCU Painting and Printmaking in 2005 and was winner of the First Art 10 Commission with the New York Youth Symphony in 2007. She lives and works in Richmond, VA. She is interested in painting urban architecture and scenery as a means to explore the relationships between social class, nature, and gentrification. Visually she is interested in the structured repetition of doors, windows and telephone poles and their fractional nature. She thinks this resembles notes and phrasing in music and thinks of this as a musical element in her work. Finally, although her work is representational and subject matter is important, Natalie's primary motivation in painting is the paint itself and the expressive and unexpected ways she is able to use it. She primarily uses photos on her phone as reference for a few reasons; The phone has become so ubiquitous in modern life that working from it better represents how most people experience the world around them. It's a tool that allows her to precisely match colors in a way that direct observation would not allow. And finally, her professors in school frowned upon it so much that wickedly she finds using it quite gratifying. Her influences are wide ranging; Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Sargent, Casatt, Warhol, Rothko, Henri, etc. A primary question guides her approach to painting: If photography can represent the world perfectly why do painters need to also? She is pulled between an urge towards perfect representation and a basic understanding that perfection is unnecessary.
