Artist Bio:

Joanna Gragnani is from Richmond, VA and discovered clay her freshman year of high school. Throughout college at the University of Virginia she studied art history, but came back to clay when she moved to Seattle, WA and began taking classes again. After returning to Richmond, Joanna rediscovered the Visual Arts Center and started taking clay classes there, as well as interning in the clay studio. This led to becoming a member of the Old Tavern Kiln Collective and building a wood kiln in New Kent, VA. She loves the community aspect of ceramics and finds inspiration in fellow clay artists and her students. Joanna's latest adventure is 43rd Street Studios, a ceramics studio in Richmond. She works out of her studio there, and she focuses on hand-building. She teaches hand-building classes at 43rd Street, and she also leads mobile clay classes around Richmond in customers' homes and businesses.

Artist Bio:

Mike Jabbur is a studio potter and educator living and working in Williamsburg, VA. Jabbur holds an M.F.A. (Ceramics, Ohio University), a B.A. (Graphic Design, Virginia Tech), and is currently Associate Professor of Art (Ceramics) in the Department of Art & Art History at William & Mary. His work highlights actions and events that enrich lives and encourage all-too-rare moments of reflection and celebration. He specializes in contemporary functional studio pottery, with education and experience in pottery, ceramic sculpture, and graphic design. In his studio practice, he produces soda-fired stoneware and oxidation-fired porcelain pottery. Areas of interest include kiln firing (gas, soda, and oxidation), clay and glaze chemistry, historical global ceramics, and contemporary American and Japanese ceramics. Jabbur was awarded the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts 2018-19 Professional Fellowship in recognition of his studio work. He has had several solo exhibitions at galleries, including Schaller Gallery (Baroda, MI), Eutectic Gallery (Portland, OR), Baltimore Clayworks (Baltimore, MD), Lillstreet Art Center (Chicago, IL), and Red Lodge Clay Center (Red Lodge, MT), and has participated in over 100 group exhibitions. He has taught workshops at colleges and ceramic centers around the country, including West Virginia University (Morgantown, WV), Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA) Red Star Studios (Kansas City, MO), and Touchstone Center for Crafts (Farmington, PA). Articles and images of his work have been published in textbooks, art books, and periodicals, including The Art of Creating and Teaching Wheel-Thrown Ceramics (Cognella Academic Publishing), 500 Teapots vol. 2 (Lark Books), and Ceramics Monthly. The American Ceramic Society produced an instructional DVD entitled Precise Imprecision, in which Jabbur demonstrates his studio process. At William & Mary, Jabbur has served as Department Chair (2020-2023) and on college and departmental committees, while also helping to develop new curriculum in Studio Art. In the classroom, he emphasizes utilitarian ceramics processes, contemporary craft theory, strong craftsmanship, and historical context-with the aim of encouraging students' personal expression.

NUNU is the ceramics and design practice of Jess Gary and is based Richmond, Virginia. With a career in the art and design world that spans 15+ years, Jess has dedicated her life to making and studying beautiful things. In 2019, seeking a creative outlet separate from her day job, Jess signed up for a beginner wheel class at a community studio and the rest is history.

Raised in the Mojave Desert, Jess brings the open skies and stark beauty of her California childhood into every design. Clean lines, negative space, and simplicity of form are at the heart of her work, but each piece has its own personality. Artist Bio:

My work is driven by materials and form. I have a profound affinity for two materials in particular - robust sculpture clay and a stretchy yarn crafted from upcycled textile remnants. My clay pieces are made through a process called handbuilding. I roll coils of clay and wrap and smooth them into shapes. Coilbuilding with this gritty sculpture clay is a bit like building sand castles. I find it very therapeutic. Vibrant satin and matte finishes complete my pieces. Working with sustainable yarn allows me to relax into the rhythm of the single crochet stitch. This eco-friendly yarn, repurposed from jersey fabric leftover by the fashion industry, not only reduces waste, but is a dream to knit with. Many of my pieces are small tables and lamps. They are a way to bring functional art into your home. I like to keep my hands busy each day, building shapes just to see where they go. The result of this work is often a small sculpture or wall hanging.

Artist Bio:

Debra Rice is a ceramic artist and educator in Richmond, VA. She holds a BFA in Design from Old Dominion University and a BFA in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. Debra discovered her passion for ceramics in 2021 at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VisArts). She instantly knew clay was the medium she'd been searching for her whole life. VisArts is now her "second home," where she creates her work, teaches Ceramic Surface Decoration, and has found the most supportive, inspiring and fun community she's known.

Debra views clay as a versatile and limitless 3D canvas. Her functional pieces feature playful twists and unique details, decorated with graphic patterns or representational imagery. Her sculptural work takes on a deeply personal, narrative quality, helping her process feelings and experiences related to living with chronic illness since age 11.

She's participated in several juried shows and many local markets, including 2024 Craft + Design. In the past year, she co-curated three exhibitions-a challenging yet rewarding experience that deepened her connections with fellow artists and gave her a newfound appreciation for the work done behind the scenes.

This is our Doozer Tulipiere. This vase comes in six separate sections and is completed with a tray. Just like the Doozers of fraggle rock each individual tulipiere works together to make one bigger vase, while having the ability to look adorable on their own too.

Artist Bio:

Our names are Matt and Val. We are two best buddies who have collaborated on many projects together since 2012. We love experimenting where to find shapes, from found object assemblages, hand carving, 3d designs with CNC routing, and 3d printing. Most of our shapes are now 3d printed using a resin printer, but the inspiration still pulls from all of the above. Matt's background is in sculpture and it was through his knowledge of mold making that brought us to slip casting. Val's background is in painting and she's loved wrapping her brain around glazes and the colors they bring. We've loved all the projects we've collaborated on together in the past but but none compare to how happy PVP makes us.

My work has also been featured in Ceramics Monthly, a national publication devoted to the ceramic arts. I live in a wonderful old neighborhood in beautiful Richmond, Virginia.

Cindy Shelton-Eide is an artist and art educator living in Richmond, Virginia. As a native of RVA, Cindy grew up exploring the backyard creeks that feed into the James River, instilling a love of nature that would later inform all of her artwork. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Painting and Printmaking in '07, and later with a Master of Art Education in '12. After practicing under the great tutelage of ceramic artists at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond beginning in 2008, she realized that clay was her passion. She has now been teaching and practicing ceramics full-time for over a decade at Goochland High School, the Visual Art Center of Richmond, and 43rd St Studios.
