Alice Bahra Artist Biography
Alice Bahra is a multidisciplinary artist engaging with art forms including but not limited to photography, theater, fashion design, pottery and ceramic art. For many years she worked with clay, a natural material for making vessels. Each clay object is made as a unique piece. The pieces are repeated depending on the edition or demand. In the course of her artisan work, Bahra eventually began to cut up, nest, pile and build her vessels. The jugs, vases, cups and mugs became more physical, their substance became a sculptural material, they took up space, asserted themselves in space. The bodies began to move on the surface. The pieces of crockery on a tray now looked like figures on a playing field or like architecture on a floor plan. Bahra's decision to switch from coloured clay to white porcelain, which was no longer modeled but cast, opened up production with the means of reproduction. The model became a module. Free sculptural work took its place alongside her usual practice.

Cliff Lee - Textured Bowl
$625Cliff Lee
Textured Bowl
4.5"H 8"Diameter
Cliff Lee Artist Biography
Cliff Lee was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1951, where his father was stationed as ambassador. Lee began his education in Taiwan and moved to the United States in 1968 to attend Eastern Mennonite College, where he earned a degree in biology in 1971. He attended medical school in the 1970s at the Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State College, specializing in neurosurgery. After starting work as a physician, and looking to reduce stress after long workdays, Lee enrolled in a ceramics class at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It was there that he found the two passions of his life: studio pottery and his future bride, Holly, a jewelry designer. Lee enrolled in the school's ceramics master's program and received his degree in 1976.
With four decades of experience under his belt, Lee stands as a master craftsman in the world of ceramics. From his humble beginnings, Lee has honed his skills, shaping clay into exquisite forms that captivate the imagination. His hands possess an intuitive understanding of the medium, seamlessly translating his vision into tangible works of art. With each piece, Cliff infuses a piece of his soul, creating vessels that speak of timelessness and beauty. Through years of dedication and practice, he has mastered the delicate dance between tradition and innovation, continually pushing the boundaries of his craft. Lee's pottery serves not only as a testament to his talent but also as a bridge connecting past and present, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of ceramic artistry.

Paula Winokur Artist Biography
Paula Colton Winokur (1936-2018) was an American artist. She was one of the leading ceramic artists in the United States from the 1970s until her death in 2018. Paula was born and raised in Philadelphia. She attended Tyler School of Art, where she was a student of Rudolf Staffel, and where she met her future husband, Robert Winokur. Paula was a pioneer in several aspects of our clay community. Her work in porcelain was groundbreaking in its emphasis on the strength and robustness of the material, rather than the traditional emphasis on its delicacy. Paula overcame sexism in her early career, being told that as a wife and mother she did not deserve a full-time teaching position. She went on to lead the ceramics program at Arcadia University, and became a mentor to countless young women as she gained well-deserved status in the field.
In the last decades of her career she turned her artistic attention to environmental issues, using her beautiful sculptures to bring attention to global warming and the melting of the world's icebergs, the work she is now best known for.Notable were the monumental, jagged, and nuanced works shaped from huge slabs of porcelain that serve as metaphors for the calving glaciers and the melting icebergs she saw on her travels in Iceland and Greenland. The clarity of her vision and the intuitive handling of her material are tactile reminders of our eroding environment. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, Winokur taught ceramic art at Arcadia University (formally known as Beaver College), in Glenside, Pennsylvania. In 2002 she was elected to the College of Fellows at the American Craft Council. She has exhibited widely and has been collected by museums around the world - notably the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Contemporary Art.

Nancy Carman Artist Biography
Nancy Carman's art is a contemporary take on traditional ceramic painted pottery and figurine tableaus.
Carman is known for Surrealistic figurative hand-built sculptures and tiles using low fired clays. Surfaces vary from highly finished sculptures including a simplified asexual human and graphic element and earlier faceted unglazed objects. The figures that appear in Carman's work often appears stark and lacking gender identification. Surfaces are developed using various glazing techniques. Often Carmen's compositions are narrative.
In this work, images of separation of parts (the figure, the head, the water) are meditations on mind/body, the singular nature of the individual and our territorial impulses.

I am very interested in the utilitarian object and how it can be used as a means of narration. My work blends the macabre with the beautiful, which acts as a metaphor for the fragility and resiliency of life. By using my interest in morphology and anatomy I present the viewer with a detailed examination of the living structures of the natural world. The juxtaposition of the botanical and anatomical elements can simultaneously be jarring, disquieting, and beautiful. This dichotomy also enhances the tactile quality of the work enticing personal interaction with the viewer.

Marianne Tebbens - Sea Bowl

Marianne Tebbens Artist Statement
" My work in clay has evolved over the years from mostly functional, with the vessel as the predominant form, to an increasing number of sculptural pieces, with the human face, hands, torso, and elements of nature emerging. This evolution has occurred in conjunction with my work as a Psychotherapist and Art Therapist, as well as through my own personal growth experiences.
Other themes emerging are human relationships, human emotions, and relationships between humans and Nature, and the dangers and risks to the feminine and the intuitive in our culture at this time in history. For example, in my sculptures of idealized feminine figures with goddess-like qualities, I may be asking the viewer to connect with aspects of the feminine, like strength, beauty, spirit, or sexuality. In expressing the connection between humans and the Earth (a series I call "Human Nature"), I often use sculptural elements from nature like leaves and shells, etc. And to represent human connections, or disconnections, I use sculpted faces, hands, and torsos.
After I have completed a series of sculptures I usually feel drawn back to my potters wheel and to the sweet and rhythmic dance of throwing simple functional forms again.
I create my pieces with a variety of clays and processes. I work in stoneware, porcelain, Raku and earthenware clays and fire in reduction, wood, salt, Raku, and primitive types of kilns. Process excites me, and the Alchemy of clay, form and fire offer me infinite possibilities. This is what has stimulated my creative energies for so many years, and keeps me fired up!!"
