Dan Coyle & Danny White
"Blurred Lines"
Flameworking & Hot Sculpting
June 2 - 6 (5-day workshop)

This sculptural glass class will explore what is possible when flame work and furnace work converge. By examining process and discovering techniques we will begin to blur the lines of both avenues of glassmaking. The goal is to feed the notion that anything is possible with a calculated approach. Primarily rooted in sculpture related to concept and narrative, ideas will be deconstructed to hone in on the best angle of pursuit. Whether it is on the torch or from the furnace... or both!

Be prepared to learn new techniques and recalibrate ones that are familiar. Look forward to making figurative work that involves preparation, parts building, and final assembly. Utilizing tools and equipment from both the hot shop and flameshop.

From start to finish this course will bridge gaps and brighten the grey areas between the glass processes to allow your sculptural dreams to come to life. Bring an open sketchbook and an open mind, because we will be entering some uncharted territory.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.

*At least two years of either flameworking or furnace working experience is preferred.

About Dan Coyle:

Daniel S. Coyle started blowing glass in 2003. In 2006, after graduating from Salem Community College with a degree in Scientific Glassblowing, he started his career as a scientific glassblower. After 5 years working for a chemical company he quit his job in order to pursue his artistic vision in glass pipes.
He currently resides in Western Massachusetts, where he works alongside of some of the state's top pipe makers.

"Often my work is playful in nature and can remind you of toys; I guess I like to bring the viewer (or user) back to their childhood and also remind them to not take life so seriously... Why pipes? Making an object into a pipe will allow someone to bond with that object. They will have experiences with it, develop a relationship with it, in time it will become more than a piece in their collection- it will become sentimental." -Coyle
