"Drawing with Glass Inside & Out:
Secrets to Stringertech!"
Flameworking
May 27 - 30, 2025 (4-day workshop)
Join us for this 4-day class where we will explore the multiple techniques of stringer drawn images including surface drawn, flip discs and cut and flip. This class will show students how to begin drawing their own images and also teach the tips and tricks that will give students the power to expand their creative style.
We will learn color theory, application, as well as going over which colors not to use and when not to use them. We will explore our creativity, have discussions on finding your own personal style, and how we can then clearly translate these concepts and ideas to the glass we are working with and then in turn our audience of finished work.
Once we have established the basic ground works for these techniques, we will explore how we can bend and even break these rules to further our own creative journey in the world of glass.
Students can expect to get a hands-on learning experience mixed with, teacher lead demos, discussions and a relaxed, fun and memorable experience.
This class is considered to be intermediate to advanced skill level and a minimum of 2 years of flame working is required. Students should be adept at working both hollow and solid glass and be prepared to put in real work toward learning these advanced techniques.
This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Tuesday through Friday, with additional studio time Tuesday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included.
About Shayla:
Shayla Windstar Behrman grew up surrounded by strong men and women who worked with their hands, creating art, creating music, and creating a life through the crafts that fed their family and the families of those around them.
Not surprisingly, Shayla developed a passion for the arts and working with her hands, including sketching, macramé, carving, beadwork, needlework, pottery and, eventually, glass. Her mother, a successful entrepreneur who owned several smoke shops, approached her about making production glass for her customers and it was love at first sight.
After starting her own studio in Pueblo, Colorado, Shayla honed her work into a technique combining stringer tech, with dark lines and transparent colors, that she calls "stained glass tech." This -- combined with her strong foundational skills and striking sculpting -- earned her numerous awards at glass shows, competitions and venues across the United States.
