David Graeber
"Flameworking Suspended in Glass"
June 16 - 20, 2025 (5-day workshop)

This class teaches soft glass techniques for beginners to experienced flameworkers. We will cover the fundamentals of sculpting three dimensional set up's which can stand alone or to be casted into a square or round shapes. We will be working with COE 96 glass and if you have specific colors you like working with, please bring them with you. Sketch books are recommended.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.

Think of a prism. You see different colors and shapes as you turn it in the light. This multi-faceted glass is a bit like human life, and certainly my life.  I'm David Graeber, a Southern New Jersey flameworker who specializes in floral paperweights. In thinking about my past  and the years to come, I recognize the people, experiences, and opportunities that have shaped and continue to shape my work.

Today, in addition to creating my own floral-themed paperweights, I am teaching flameworking at the Paul J. Stankard Studio and Lab at Salem Community College located at Carney's Point in Salem County, New Jersey. It is an honor for me to carry on Paul's artistic vision and accomplishments.  Paul, an internationally acclaimed glass artist, took me "under his wing" as an assistant in 1989.   Then in 2009 I established my studio in Westmont, Camden County, New Jersey.

Much of my work reflects the beauty and uniqueness of New Jersey's million acre Pinelands National Reserve. Delicate cranberry blossoms, elegant Moccasin orchids,  vast fields of blueberries, and the honey bees that pollinate them are just some of the creations that inspire me.

In the tradition of Paul Stankard, I welcome the opportunity to give back to the community at large including Daniel's Den Community Center in Vineland, New Jersey, First Love Unbroken, Egg Harbor New Jersey, and Perkins Center for the Arts in Collingswood, New Jersey. During the past year, I have taught classes in bead making, marbles and glass casting. In my final class for 2022, my students were all 50 years of age of older. Yes, learning is for everyone!
