30" x 40" Acrylic on Canvas Palette Knife Painting by Raleigh's own, John Erickson.
Dr. John Erickson is an orthopedic surgeon who practices in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has always enjoyed creating art in various mediums, but the COVID-19 pandemic gave him the rare opportunity to slow down and try his hand at painting. During the first few stressful months of the pandemic, painting provided an outlet for relaxation and creativity. Currently, John appreciates the process of creating art in his free time and being present in the moment while painting. Inspired by the beauty of the natural world, he often paints coastal scenes, mountain landscapes, and animals. John hopes that his artwork is approachable and able to produce joy wherever it is displayed.
As a child, John loved to draw. He spent countless hours drawing detailed creations from his imagination. For most of his childhood, his medium consisted of colored pencils, ink, and sketchpad paper. John also spent time behind the lens as an amateur photographer. He attributes his early creativity and artistic ability to his mother Diana, who was a gifted oil painter. As life became busier as a practicing surgeon and dedicated father, John did not make time to pursue art. However, the mandatory slow down in 2020 gave him a reason to explore this interest. Currently, John carves out time to paint, working with acrylics and using color to capture sunlight.
John and his wife Kim, daughter Annie, and dog Piper enjoy the outdoors, especially the mountains and coastal waters of North Carolina. Most of his paintings are inspired by the places he has visited within North Carolina and around the country. His artwork can be found at ArtSource Fine Art in Raleigh's North Hills and on Instagram @johnerickson_art.
