The Legend of the Christmas Spider:

"According to ancient storytellers, there once was a poor, but hardworking widow living in a small hut with her children. One summer day, a pinecone dropped from the tree outside and took root in their earthen floor. They cared for the tree, excited at the prospect of having a Christmas tree by winter. The tree grew, but when Christmas Eve arrived, they could not afford to decorate it. The family accepted their fate and went to bed with the tiny tree branches bare. The household's spiders heard the children's sobs and spun intricate webs on the tree. On Christmas morning, they rose to find that during the night spiders had spun webs around the fragile branches. When they opened the curtains, the sunshine hit the webs, turning them into silver and gold. As the story goes, from that day forward the family had good fortune.
