The story of Noble ROT
P.S. TOR spelled backwards. This is arguably one of the hardest wines in the world to make, as well as one of the most labor-intensive and expensive to produce. It is a gamble from the beginning to the end - requiring perfect weather conditions that allow the Noble rot to occur in the vineyard - to very experienced winemaking to craft the finished product. The winery has only made this wine in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014, and 2018.
TOR Noble ROT is made on the model of Chateau d'Yquem. These are unbelievably sweet and unctuous wines that push all the buttons on anyone's palate. The family is brazen enough to say that their Noble ROT can share the d'Yquem stage in every way. It is made in the vineyard. The varietals are Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, all hand-picked, barrel-fermented, and then aged in small barrel. They were only able to make 2 barrels in 2014.

In 2003, James and Andrea Frey purchased a steep and rocky site five miles outside the town of McMinnville. They moved their young children to Oregon, planted a vineyard, and founded Trisaetum (tris-say-tum) in one of the few places where climate, soil, and entrepreneurial spirit combine to produce some very special wines. Two years later, they acquired another piece of land twenty minutes away on Ribbon Ridge, planted a second vineyard, and eventually built the winery where all of their the wines are made today.
The name Trisaetum is an amalgam of James and Andrea's two children---Tristen and Tatum.

Since 1997 Darioush Kahledi, a former civil engineer and lifelong entrepreneur, originally from Iran, has been making rock-solid, delicious, serious Cabernet Sauvignon (and a few other varietals) at his spot on the Silverado Trail near Yountville. This newer release, packed with rich, spicy black fruits and a super-polished, round style, was made by Hope Goldie of the famed Opus One among many more wineries.

OVID Napa Valley is a singular, dynamic, and continuous experiment in terroir, nestled at an elevation of 1,500 feet on a secluded mountaintop in the western reaches of Pritchard Hill. There, iron-rich volcanic soils, abundant sunshine, and chaparral flora alchemize to reveal focused wines that celebrate their source. All four OVID estate wines are sourced from the winery's organically farmed 15-acre vineyard, planted in one-acre blocks with rootstock and clonal combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Syrah.
Seeing less time on skins and a shorter maceration, the 2018 red blend is comprised of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. The pre-Italian civilization of antiquity, the ancient Etruscans, a wonderfully enigmatic, early winemaking culture, inspired Gamba Estate's endeavor, Etrusca.
Etrusca represents Gamba's way of honoring a personal connection to the past through wine. The idea of Etrusca began out of a desire to learn of family roots; reaching far into their family's ancestry to uncover more about where they are from, and their winemaking history, by exploring and celebrating how they arrived where they are today. This pursuit led to the idea of an unlimited source of artistic expression in wine.
Etrusca strives to create a palate of flavors that range from elegant to bold expressions through blending wines which affords an exciting exercise in endless possibilities and an expression of passion. Sourcing fruit from an unlimited number of carefully chosen vineyard sites, and assembling specifically selected varieties of winegrapes from one or more appellations to make their wine blends is the essence of Etrusca.
Showcasing a deep cherry red and magenta core, the nose expresses delicate red fruits of currant and strawberry, assisted by structured graphite, cassis, and blackberry from the generous helping of Cabernet Sauvignon. Opulent and fully textured, French oak accentuates the mouthfeel but is never dominant. This togetherness combines the lovely floral aromatics of Grenache with the savory panache of Cabernet. While accessible now and carrying a seamless structure and mouthfeel, patience will reward mid-term cellaring of around 4-6 years of release.

Pinot Noir from Oregon is all about layers, complicated layers, and the gliding feel of fruit in the mouth. There is a great and wondrous space to explore in Dominio Pinot Noirs. Whereas many wines are densely packed, these wines are all about the silky spaces between their parts and abound in aromas of red and black cherries, black currants, sweet earth, subtle spice, and dark cola. Enjoyed early in their development, the lively Pinot Noir fruit can deftly shade the spice and earthen tones. Around 3-6 years, these wines tend to begin an ascent into earthen grace that can persist for many years.
The 2018 Black & Red Pinot is richly dark-fruited, with wonderful spice that rolls atop gliding texture.

Winemaker Patrick Sullivan has created a unique style, producing an elegant Pinot Noir that reflects the best qualities of three remarkable vineyards. Developing the blend from sites using different clones of Calera, Pommard, and 667, Sullivan made a finished wine that expresses the traits of each clone as well as the soils and site locations. Two sites selected for this wine included Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley vineyards planted by the late Ulises Valdez. An additional Russian River Valley site was selected for this blend from a multi-generational Sonoma County Family. This wine is silky and balanced as it opens extensively in the glass. Hints of bright raspberries, ripe cherry, dark plum, cocoa, and black olive meet a long-lasting finish on the back palate.

In 1993, Jayson Pahlmeyer invited three of Napa Valley's most storied winemakers, Helen Turley, Bob Levy, and Randy Dunn, to the Pahlmeyer blending table to assess the lots from his 1992 vintage. As the four tasted and blended, the results in the glass inspired them to showcase a more intimate, approachable expression of the Pahlmeyer pedigree. Ultimately, they created a wine that possessed a soulfulness and suppleness ready to enjoy in the moment - and "Jayson" was born.
Today, Winemaker Katie Vogt continues the spirit of that legendary table. She seeks out select blocks within the Pahlmeyer mountain vineyard portfolio that possess the signature character of Jayson: rich and lively, with elevated aromatics and gorgeous texture. Katie then blends these lots with a complementing spectrum of extraordinary foothill and valley floor vineyards that are farmed and crafted by exacting Pahlmeyer standards.
