Artist Full Name: Morgan Overton
Description of the Artwork: What does true freedom feel like to you? In 2024, we are still writing the chapters of a modern day civil rights movement. Where Do We Go From Here is an oil and acrylic painting that is a nod to Dr. King's final speech "I've Been to the Mountaintop".
"Something is happening in our world. The masses of people are rising up. And wherever they are assembled today, whether they are in Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Accra, Ghana; New York City; Atlanta, Georgia; Jackson, Mississippi; or Memphis, Tennessee -- the cry is always the same: "We want to be free."
Artist BIO: Morgan Overton is a visual artist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She creates across various mediums to vibrantly interpret social, cultural, and political issues as an ode to the bell hooks quote: "The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is - it's to imagine what is possible".
Inspired by the tradition of artists from the Harlem Renaissance to our contemporary age, Morgan works in portraiture to center the humanity of historically disenfranchised communities as means to inform our collective future.Morgan's work has been widely showcased across institutions and community organizations in Greater Pittsburgh. Her work has been on exhibit in the Pennsylvania State Capitol, and the United States Capitol. Internationally, in St. Paul de Vence, France and Paris, France.
