Joey Harrell completed his Ph.D. in Music Education at Penn State, focusing on Musical Theatre Voice Pedagogy. His journey to teaching began with a passion for singing, which evolved into a fascination with the voice and a commitment to education. A critical moment that steered him towards teaching was overcoming challenges with his own voice.
Harrell earned an undergraduate degree in vocal performance but left school with vocal issues that forced him to cancel several performances. This experience sparked a deep desire to understand how the voice works and how it can be rehabilitated.
Two key experiences shaped his understanding of teaching. First, at the Boston Conservatory, he learned about the physical properties of the voice through the study of its anatomy, physiology, and physics.
The second was at Penn State University, where his mentors helped him grasp the acoustic qualities of the voice, particularly in Musical Theatre singing.
These pillars-understanding the structure of the voice and the sounds of Musical Theatre singing-formed the foundation of his teaching philosophy. He then sought to gain practical experience in the highly individualized process of guiding singers' education.
Today, Harrell continues to rely on these foundational ideas, but he acknowledges that his most significant learning experiences come from daily interactions with his clients and fellow teachers. Each teaching day brings growth and learning, and he remains grateful for the brilliant colleagues and clients he engages with regularly.
