The John Nally Internship is a hands-on, paid apprenticeship that trains the next generation of gardeners. Working alongside the Director and Associate Director of Horticulture and the Wave Hill Gardeners, interns become skilled in sustainable approaches used to manage a public garden. Their rigorous duties are diverse: mulching the garden beds; digging and planting of shrubs, trees, annuals and perennials; and weeding beds and watering containers in the nursery and public display areas. The intern's curiosity and energy have become indispensable to Wave Hill's pursuit of garden excellence.

About Sakonnet Garden, John Gywnne & Mikel Folcarelli

Sakonnet Garden is the masterwork-and handiwork, as the spaces are too small for anything but a wheelbarrow-of John Gywnne and Mikel Folcarelli. Started in the early 1970s as a collection of esoteric specimens planted within a thicket, Sakonnet Garden has evolved into a Medina-like maze of enchanting outdoor rooms, reflecting the pair's diverse style and experiments with plants, color, and light. Superbly placed allées and sculptured hedges link the garden together with a menagerie of plant wonders displayed throughout. This eclectic celebration for the artistry of nature is just one reason Wave Hill is delighted to honor John, Mikel, and Sakonnet Garden. Moreover, the garden is now dedicated to disseminating horticultural goodwill by hosting international seminars and growing the wildly popular annual Sakonnet Plant Fair in May.

Sakonnet Garden is grounded in the artistic and illustrious careers of its composers. John is a landscape architect and long-time head of design for the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo where he helped reinvent natural habitat exhibits. He is an illustrator for multiple Neotropical bird field guides, and now focuses on new experiments at Sakonnet Garden.

Mikel had a long and renowned global design career in fashion, hospitality, and interior design, including Polo Ralph Lauren's Madison Avenue flagship store. He now serves on multiple local boards and commissions, plus welcomes thousands yearly to Sakonnet Garden.

Plant Sale & Silent Auction

Our plant sale highlights will include divisions from Wave Hill's own collection and specially grown gems from issima and The Bunker Farm.

This year our silent auction will be available for online bidding and features expertly curated plant specimens and garden experiences only found at Wave Hill.

We are also offering the following unique auction items to in-person guests only:

Basket-making Workshop for Two with Deborah Needleman
Weave your own breadbasket during a private tutorial and lunch with Deborah at her Garrison, NY studio;  grow your own future supplies with three pots of willow, provided by Wave Hill.

Faux Bois Bird Bath
Renowned author, photographer, and garden communicator Ken Druse has employed the classic art form of faux bois (false wood) to sculpt a handcrafted and one-of-a-kind bird bath for your feathered friends to use and enjoy.

Sakonnet Garden Tour and Stay for Four
Revel in the coastal splendor of Little Compton, RI with two oceanfront rooms at the historic Stone House Inn. John and Mikel will provide an entertaining and inspirational tour of Sakonnet Garden, along with two other nearby, private gardens. Then convene for drinks and dinner at their home, but only after the miniature ponies are safely in the barn.
