Description:
This is a counted cross-stitch called "Belonging" that I made over several months in 2023, but completed with frame in 2024. I like it because it's got an old world, colonial American feel to it. I was a social studies teacher, and that was one of my favorite periods to teach because it's about our country's independence and the beginning of our constitutional republic. However, the message to me is that we all belong to each other. The colors are unique as they generally don't go together in embroidery, but they work really well in this piece. It meshes the old and the new, but also reiterates the meaning that everyone belongs.
Dimensions:
11" x 14"
Artist Statement:
I have always supported GSAFE's work, but my awareness of the struggles of LGBTQ+ youth in Wisconsin has made my support even more resolute. I recognize the hardships that LGBTQ+ students and staff face in our institutions. As someone with family members who have disabilities and family and friends who are LGBTQ+, I am a strong believer in inclusion. I believe that society would be healthier if everyone belonged and felt safe. I think about my former students who felt excluded and were subjected to harmful policiies by various institutions. I will continue to fight for their full inclusion.
This is a wall-hanging featuring a group of figures in Pride colors and stars. Their colors and the lime background are made using Cherrywood fabrics for a richer, more intense presentation.

I've been participating since 2021. I look forward to the opportunity to challenge myself as a fiber arts artist that will provide GSAFE with income for their various programs.
I translated the music of Somewhere Over the Rainbow into color. The back of the quilt shows the music scale of the colors. This wall hanging can be hung using curtain clips, but if you'd prefer, I can add a hanging sleeve for free!
27.5" x 37"
Made with bright and bold fabrics, this quilt would make an attractive wall hanging or a bright baby quilt.

This wall hanging highlights the best of what Door County has to offer! Door Co. is also LGBTQ+ friendly, and both high schools have a GSA. What a better way to celebrate "Togetherness" than by relaxing and exploring in this beautiful vacation paradise?
44" x 50"
I first learned about GSAFE when I was teaching at a middle school. They were my support system and guide when I was starting a GSA at my school. I have a brother who is gay, and I can only imagine how his life would have been different if GSAFE existed in the early 1980s. I now give back by volunteering with this wonderful organization.

We are all a rainbow of what life has to offer. Embrace it! Following a stroke three years ago, I have gone back to art quilts in small dimensions. Rather than a neutral background, I wanted to see how shapes would hold together on a busy background.
12" x 12" (16" x 16" framed)
I picked up the flyer at the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show. Looks like a good cause!
This is a scrap quilt composed of rainbow colors and fun black/white prints using the Stash Pot Pie pattern. The binding follows the colors, and a sleeve on the back will allow the quilt to be used as a wall hanging.

I was a high school teacher, and feel that all kids need support as they learn about themselves and the world, especially if they don't fit into the "typical" high school atmosphere. Kindness matters!

This quilted wall hanging features 100 unique tiny houses, no two alike, and oh so close together! Every row honors a color of the LGBTQ rainbow, plus black and brown to include people of color, sometimes called the Philadelphia flag. While making the quilt, I was reminded of the folks song, "The more we are together, together, together; the more we are together, the happier we'll be." The tag on the back features this lyric.
44" x 48"
It is my wish that this tiny house rainbow creation will remind the recipient, and all who see it, of the love and support of their community.
This lobster is crocheted to have a transgender flag as their shirt. If this stuffy is for a youngster please simply cut off the beaded bracelet. The beads are a choking hazard. If it's for an older kiddo or adult then you may choose if you want to keep it on or not!

A friend sent me the link to this event knowing my love for crocheting. They are a part of the queer community, and are so generous with their community events and connections information. I love any opportunity to be able to use my craft to support organizations that I can wholeheartedly support, especially as I navigate the possibility of my own queerness.

I was made aware of GSAFE over the pandemic when both of my children were heavily invested in exploring their identities. As it was a difficult time for all, my husband and I wanted to show not only with words, but also with action, the love and support we feel for each of them. It has become our mission to extend that support to the many children and young adults who may not have as safe a place to land.

I attended a Drag King/Queen show in Stoughton and met someone working with GSAFE. It sounded like a great opportunity to support some great people. I asked my grandmas to do what they could do - my Grandma Sue made these pumpkins.

I hold a strong belief that kids need to be accepted, loved, respected, and embraced for exactly who they are. A good friend invited me to walk in GSAFE's Trick or Trot several years ago, and since then I have learned more about GSAFE and the work they do, and try to find different ways to support them.
