I designed this quilt to hang in a bathroom. I began laying a grid over the traditional US bathroom symbols, then removing/playing with different bits to create a final design. The more I removed, the more I liked how deconstructing the female/male forms communicates the dysfunction inherent in the strict binary presentation of gender.

This is a counted cross-stitch called "Belonging" that I made over several months in 2023, but completed with frame in 2024. I like it because it's got an old world, colonial American feel to it. I was a social studies teacher, and that was one of my favorite periods to teach because it's about our country's independence and the beginning of our constitutional republic. However, the message to me is that we all belong to each other. The colors are unique as they generally don't go together in embroidery, but they work really well in this piece. It meshes the old and the new, but also reiterates the meaning that everyone belongs.

I have always supported GSAFE's work, but my awareness of the struggles of LGBTQ+ youth in Wisconsin has made my support even more resolute. I recognize the hardships that LGBTQ+ students and staff face in our institutions. As someone with family members who have disabilities and family and friends who are LGBTQ+, I am a strong believer in inclusion. I believe that society would be healthier if everyone belonged and felt safe. I think about my former students who felt excluded and were subjected to harmful policiies by various institutions. I will continue to fight for their full inclusion.

The shapes in this quilt create five columns of feathers all pointing in the same direction. Each feather is unique, and each column features a different colorway. The fabrics are primarily tone-on-tone with some white accents. This quilt was made with a process called paper piecing. The process is time consuming, but allows for very accurate piecing of seams with sharp angles. The fabrics are all 100% cotton, and the batting is 80/20 cotton and polyester.

This is my take on a signature/community quilt. The quilt design is based on the Lula Magnolia Panel Quilt by Amy Smart of diaryofaquilter.com. I used 30 eight-inch blocks - fifteen full blocks and fifteen pieced 16-patch blocks - set off with sashing to help show off each individual block. My small community of friends and family came together to design the 16-patch blocks. It is quilted with a paper doll motif to represent community and togetherness. Of special note is the center pink text block, where I pieced the cut of fabric together to make the word "together" read as one unit - giving this quilt another layer of the "Together" theme.

I have been the primary volunteer photographer for the GSAFE auction for the past two years. Thanks to a GSAFE donation last year, I was given the "Happy Home" fat quarter bundle by AGF - a bundle with home, love, inclusion, and community motifs. When I heard the theme for this year's auction was "Together," I immediately thought of a community coming together and knew that I needed to use the "Happy Home" bundle to make something this year. I decided to create a community quilt because I liked the idea of coming together to share my love of quilting with my artistic but non-quilting friends and family, while also creating something for a good cause. Quilting as a craft also involves piecing individual fabrics together to create a larger piece. I like the various layers of "togetherness" that my quilt illustrates

Every row honors a color of the LGBTQ rainbow, plus black and brown to include people of color, sometimes called the Philadelphia flag. While making the quilt, I was reminded of the folks song, "The more we are together, together, together; the more we are together, the happier we'll be." The tag on the back features this lyric.

As a lesbian parent of a child now grown, I am by some considered a CHILDLESS cat lady. How can I NOT support GSAFE and the vital services they provide for the benefit of ALL children?

This quilt consists of fifty 8 inch by 8 inch blocks in the calming colors of blue, purple, and green, with a bit of red to add vibrancy. It is a scrappy quilt with each block representing a fish, and the quilt as a whole representing a school of fish swimming TOGETHER for companionship and protection. NOTE: The quilting was done by 31 Lemons Long Arm Service and continues the nautical theme by creating stunning waves across the quilt.

I love to make quilts, and donating to a local group is very important to me! I choose to donate to GSAFE because I support their mission of promoting LGBTQ+ rights.

Description:

The pattern is "Chain Links" from Me and My Sister Designs. The fabric used for the main body, backing, and binding is Jinny Beyer "Playa". I purchased the fabric a few years ago just because it caught my eye. The accent is a white fabric with splatters of iridescent colors that pick up all of the colors in the print. This was quilted by Kim Tocci at Quigley's Quilts who used a pattern called "Over the Rainbow" and while Kim was quilting this on her long arm machine, I had enough time and fabric left over to make two standard size pillowcases to match the quilt. The fabrics for the top, backing, and binding are cotton with quilters dream bamboo used as the batting.

*It will wash beautifully but definitely use a few color catcher sheets for the first wash!

I live in Colorado and was unfamiliar with the powerful work that GSAFE does until my sister and niece, who reside in Madison, shared GSAFE with me. My niece, Luna, teaches me every day through her example of how beautiful we all are when we are allowed the freedom to be truthful to who we are. I am humbled by her strength, her wisdom, and her beauty and I look forward to seeing the impact she'll have on the world along with all other LGBTQ+ youth. I loved making this pattern as each link on its own is pretty, but only when we see the links joined together do we see just how much more beautiful and strong we all can be when we join together in kindness and love.

This quilt is a beautiful rainbow bookcase, packed with books made of fabrics as diverse as the queer community itself. Book club members had a great time picking out fun fabrics and patterns, building a bookcase that represents the range of worlds and experiences found in books as well. And it's not just books! There are also a cat, vases of flowers, and a treasure box mixed in with the books.

The Queer Joy Book Club was formed in the summer of 2022, by three readers who had only met a few months before. Initially meeting in restaurants, the group now meets at the Goodman South Library on the third Tuesday of each month. What began as a book group has grown into a community, with various members meeting for book events, thrifting, seasonal potlucks, movies, weekly exercise classes, crafting, and more. --> The 2023 GSAFE quilt auction was a subject of intense discussion in the group's Discord. When the 2024 auction's theme of "Together" was announced, one member offered up her fabric stash, and another offered their organizational skills, and a group project was born. Plans to poll the group to choose a pattern were immediately discarded upon finding photos of bookcase quilts online. --> Six different sewing days were planned, attended by a dozen different volunteers, most of whom had little to no quilting experience, and some who had never sewn before! Some group members even participated simply by providing snacks for the sewists on crafting days. --> The project organizers were delighted to learn that one member had access to a long-arm quilting machine, who donated her tie to do the quilting. Many members assisted in hand-stitching the binding the group's Book Camp Weekend in September. --> Creating this quilt has been a labor of love for the group, and has been a source of personal growth and self-discovery for several members as well. At least 20 people have worked "Together" to create this quilt, and we're so excited to be donating it to support GSAFE. This was a fantastic way for a book club focused on queer joy and community to give back to our community and support queer joy in the next generation.

This quilt was made by 3 friends, some of whom are also family and allies or members of the LGBTQI+ community. This quilt was made with LOVE! Additional back story as told by Ellen: We collaborated TOGETHER on the construction of the quilt top. We all made 1/3 of the blocks apart from each other with fabrics from our own stashes, and then we spent a weekend TOGETHER at my mom's house in Eau Claire laying all of our blocks out on the design wall and then we all sewed them TOGETHER into the quilt top that same weekend. Then we all pin-basted the quilt TOGETHER and then my mom (Jerilynn) hand quilted it! :D

I was made aware of GSAFE over the pandemic when both of my children were heavily invested in exploring their identities. I learned about GSAFE when my youngest child was in high school and became president of their GSA. They then had the honor of becoming a GSAFE Youth Leadership Award recipient. They also attended the Leadership Training Institute (LTI) camp and GSAFE gave my nonbinary child just the skills they needed to thrive in college and beyond.

The scarf is a tube and so it's very, very warm. Wear it up north or during a polar vortex! Eleven of the thirteen colors are Briggs and Little yarn from the oldest mill in Canada.

This was a fun and at times challenging knit!

I got the pattern for this spring-y throw out of a library book. I did the whole process myself on my domestic Juki DX-2000 qvp, one of my first finished projects on this machine. The sweet color palette is great for anyone who loves pastels! A lot of the fabric is quilting themed, a bonus for quilters themselves.

This bag was constructed using the Emerson Crossbody Quilted Bag pattern from the Blanket Statement, and features two zippered compartments + an interior pocket big enough to store everyday essentials and a bit more. Finished with a combination of machine and hand sewing. Lined with Moda lawn, and the strap is made with organic cotton webbing.

Cthulhu is an ancient, cosmic sea monster who spends most of his time chilling in the sunken city of R'lyeh, plotting world domination-while taking naps. With an octopus face, dragon wings, and a body big enough to make Godzilla look like a goldfish, he's basically the universe's most stressed-out deity, trying to keep his cult followers from accidentally summoning him during their weekly book club.

THIS hand-crocheted Cthulhu is about the size of a large, fancy goldfish, AND he's machine washable (gentle cycle, and we recommend air drying him after a good soak) with safety eyes so he should be safe for children. But we still recommend you check on him occasionally...because Cthulhu.
