THE SUPREME COURT 2022

I am deeply honored to have a banned piece of art in Equality Florida's "Stand With the
Banned" silent auction. Last week this piece, which has been exhibited in galleries around the
country, was pulled from an invitational exhibition here in Florida after it was deemed too
controversial.
This piece, titled The Supreme Court 2022, $45 worth of black heavy duty hangers anybody
can get, follows the tradition of easily accessible protest art. The nine black hangers, the
familiar instrument of illegal abortions, represent nine justices of a Supreme Court decision to
restrict access to reproductive health care.
What I find most interesting as an artist is that the piece by itself is not threatening, it is only
after people ask what the piece is "about" that they become afraid. They aren't afraid of the
art, the art hasn't changed, they are afraid of thinking about what the art represents.
