FEATURING JAMIE MOYER
We are so excited to have Jamie Moyer, 2008 World Series Champion of the Philadelphia Phillies joining us to help celebrate all the Alzheimer's champions who have made an impact on the Alzheimer's Association and it's mission to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia - by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.
Jamie Moyer is a Philadelphia area native who attended Souderton Area High School who played baseball at St. Joseph's University before being drafted to Major League Baseball.Moyer was born in Sellersville, PA to parents Jim & Joan Moyer, and older sister Jill. Jamie's mother Joan was diagnosed with dementia prior to Jamie coming back to play for the Phillies in 2006.
Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1984, Moyer would make his major league debut against his hometown team, the Philadelphia Phillies on June 16, 1986 facing the future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton.
Moyer is one of only 31 players in baseball history to date to have appeared in MLB games in four decades.
Moyer would find himself on a number of teams over the next two decades and then twenty years later, on August 19, 2006, Moyer was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. In his first start with the Phillies, Moyer set a franchise record as the oldest pitcher to record a win.
On October 25, Moyer made his first World Series start against the Tampa Bay Rays, pitching 6 & 1/3 innings, giving up three runs. The Phillies would go on to win that game and the World Series, giving him his first World Series ring when the Phillies. In his speech at the World Series celebration at Citizens Bank Park on October 31, Moyer told fans that he grew up as a Phillies fan and played hooky from high school to attend the Phillies' championship parade in 1980.
