Book 1 - Talking in Animal by Terry Farish. Grade 5 -7. A wry, engaging study in mixed feelings from the author of Shelter For A Seabird (1990). Change is in the air, and Siobhan Hannah, 11, doesn't much like it; not only has a new family, the Graces, moved into the cottage she had earmarked as a future collie kennel, but Mr. Grace is about to marry her older friend, Maddy, and she finds herself really having to struggle to dislike Mr. Grace's daughter, Lester. Worse, her mother and Maddy have come down on different sides of the hot debate over condom dispensers in the high school. Most worrisome of all, Siobhan's beloved constant companion, Tree, a huge Lab/Newfoundland mix, is slowly losing the use of his back legs. In spare conversations and observations, Farish artfully captures the changeable weather of Siobhan's emotional landscape: denial and acceptance, anger and resignation, joy and despair, in shifting combinations.

Book 2 - White Star, A Dog on the Titanic by Marty Crisp. A simply told, poignant tale of friendship and survival, set on history's most famous doomed ship! The year is 1912, and twelve-year-old Sam Harris is traveling from England to America on the grand ship theTitanic. Sam is lonely at first, but is soon delighted to discover that there are dogs aboard! When Sam volunteers to help out in the kennel, he meets Star, a spunky Irish setter that belongs to the ship's captain. Sam and Star become fast friends, and when disaster strikes, the boy and dog must rely on each other more than ever before. The harrowing, breathless conclusion -- and fascinating historical information -- makes this boy-and-dog tale truly unforgettable.

Book 3 - Pet Rescue Club: Too Big to Run by Catherine Hopka. Grade 1 - 3. Welcome to the Pet Rescue Club! Zach's mom has a new patient-a giant dog named Maxi who has been helping her owner train for a marathon. Maxi's knees can't handle all that running and now she needs an expensive operation! Time for the kids in the Pet Rescue Club to help! Together they find a way to help Maxi. When Janey starts a blog where people can share cute pet photos and stories, she never imagined she'd receive a heartbreaking photo of a skinny, abandoned dog. She calls on her friends Lolli, Zach, and Adam to help - and that's just the start! When these animal-loving fourth graders discover how many animals need help in their suburban hometown, they can't just sit by and do nothing.
