On August 19, 2014, Shaw revealed in a video that he has ALS. He then dumped a bucket of ice water over himself as part of the Ice Bucket Challenge. Todd Rucci played on the offensive line for Penn State from 1989-1992. Drafted in the second round of the 1993 NFL Draft (51st), Rucci was honored by being named to the New England Patriots 1990s All-Decade Team. His son, Nolan Rucci has announced that he will transfer from Wisconsin to Penn State for the 2024 season. He was rated the No. 1 prospect in Pennsylvania in the 2021 recruiting class. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

The Minor League Baseball team is based in Altoona, PA and named after nearby Horseshoe Curve (but also alluding to the curveball). Head Coach Ed DeChellis was in his eighth season with the team. They finished with a record of 19-15 overall, 9-9 in Big Ten play for a 4 way tie for fourth place. They lost in the championship game to Ohio State in the 2011 Big Ten Conference men's basketball tournament. They received an at-large bid in the 2011 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, which was their first time since 2001. They lost in the first round to Temple on a last-second buzzer beater.
