This decorative wreath idea was brought forth by an OTA student during her fieldwork for graduation. The wreath was created from the collaboration of members from the Brain Rehab and Wellness program and the excitement and determination to complete it was palpable. While beautiful and artistic, the idea behind the wreath also implemented exercises in significant areas of focus for their personal journey to gain increased independence. Some members focused on fine motor, painting each piece by hand. Others worked on visual perception (how the brain processes what it sees) and helped place where each piece should go or placed each sticker by hand for the banner. Some volunteered to cut out the heart shape from the hard-to-handle cardboard. Everything, down to the color of the string of which it's meant to hang from, was decided amongst each member in collaboration for this cause. While it sounds simple, it is a huge achievement for some who may have hemiparesis or members overcoming contractions and or visual perception issues. Both the members of the OTA student involved are extremely proud and anticipating the success of this piece.

This piece was made by Curative's Registered Occupational Therapist Valarie Eggleston. Valarie works in the Brain Rehab and Wellness program.
About the piece: The painted portions of this picture represent life. Sometimes it is calm, routine, beautiful, serene, colorful, exciting or even beige. We frequently plan a path for our lives and hope we can make it happen (the straight fiber line). Injury or insult to the brain can often put up a wall (the wavy vertical fibers) and the usual path may no longer be viable. The three diagonal lines represent trying to develop new pathways to break through or around that wall until we reach the space that helps us feel safe, confident and ready to move forward again (the soft cream yarn). The diagonal lines could be family, friends, rehab teams or whatever combination feels right. Don't believe the wall is the end. Look for someone who can help you find the undiscovered pathways.
