Whitefish, Montana artist rob Akey paints what his native Montana landscape has to offer. Glacier Park peaks, worn out tractors, and bison the front range are among his subjects. Rob graduated from Minneapolis College of Arts and Design, was Creative Director for Tonka Toys and returned to Montana to paint in 1993. He is a participant in plein air events, shows and auctions throughout Montana and the west.

Robert Scriver (1914-1999) was a Montana sculptor known for his works that depicted the life and culture of the American West. Born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, Montana, Scriver developed a deep appreciation for the Western way of life, which served as inspiration for his art. He worked in a variety of mediums but is most famous for his limited-edition bronze castings of Native Americans, cowboys, hunters and wildlife.

Mark was born in Helena, Montana in 1952. He was raised and educated in Kalispell where his first venture into the art business was to help the Ace Powell Bronze Foundry in 1970. After three years of military service with the U.S. Army in Germany (and a third place finish in the European Armed Forces pool tournament), Mark committed himself to a career as a painter.

Mark began studying art under many contemporary artists including Joe Abbrescia, recognized as "one of America's most accomplished impressionist painters", Robert Cavanaugh, Ace Powell, and the late Bud Helbig of the Cowboy Artists of America.

Mark has earned a substantial reputation as one of the most talented landscape painters in America. His bold, colorful oil paintings and soft pastel watercolors have attracted the attention of private and corporate art collectors throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Mark has won many of the top artistic awards in the Northwest and Canada, including "Best of Show Awards": Wilson Hurley, one of the greatest living landscape artists in America, judged Mark's work Best of Show at the Kalispell Art Show & Auction in 1979. He won the same award again in 1982 from show judges Betty Harvey, a nationally known art editor and critic, and Mary Hunter, owner of the Hunter Gallery in San Francisco. In 1981 he won Best of Show at the Stockmans Federation show in Calgary, Alberta. In 1982 Mark was the first recipient of the Ace Powell Memorial Award. From 1987 thru 1998 Mark was placed four times in the Top 100 of the prestigious Arts for the Parks competition. This competition is sponsored by the National Parks Academy of the Arts and is a national competition. Mark is among only a handful of American artists to receive this award four times! The New Horizons competition in Las Vegas awarded Mark Best of Show in 1999.

His work has been on tour throughout the Nation including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. He has been featured in Southwest Art and Art of the West magazines, and in a new book from International Fine Art Collector Press, The New American Impressionism.

In the pursuit of art, Mark has found himself traveling around the globe. As the featured artist in the first western art exhibition ever to appear in the Republic of Ireland, Mark's work completely sold out and received great critical acclaim. Selected as a delegate to represent Montana and the Arts by the Montana Chamber of Commerce he traveled to Komoto, Japan as an honored guest of the Japanese. I hike, hunt, paint and fish in northwest Montana and my paintings reflect the freedom and openness in my life. My friends call me Montana Jane and I think it fits because the woods, the water and the wilderness tantalize me with the feel of the wind, the smell of the pines and the sound of bird songs. Karl was born in Columbus, Ohio and was raised in the southwest part of the state. College, medical School, and residency were completed at The Ohio State University. he moved to Kalispell, Montana in 1983 where he practiced medicine (otolaryngology) until 2020 when he retired. He feels very fortunate to live in the beautiful Flathead Valley and close to Glacier National Park.

Karl was introduced to oil painting by Mark Ogle and has studied with Rob Akey, Denae Wiemer, Denise Gilroy, Matt Smith and Linda Glover Gooch as well as many online courses.

Karl has participated in many plein air paint outs through the Hockaday museum of Art in Kalispell, as well as exhibiting in the Hockaday Museum's Member Salon.

Asa Lynn "Ace" Powell (April 3, 1912 - January 25, 1978) was an American painter, sculptor, and etcher of genre scenes and imagery relating to Indians, cowboys, horses, and wildlife. His artwork was influenced by that of fellow Montana artist Charles M. Russell.

Powell's lifetime body of work consists of between 12,000 and 15,000 artworks. Although he preferred working with oil paints, he also produced a large number of watercolor paintings and drawings, as well as a number of works in bronze, terracotta, and wood.

In about 1952 he attended the University of Montana on the G.I. Bill. He found that the university's art department stressed abstract art, which wasn't a style particularly well suited for a realist painter such as himself. One of his teachers told him that he couldn't make a living as an artist and would have to teach art.

When another instructor revealed that as a first-year teacher he was making $4,400, Powell replied, "Well, I'm an alcoholic and I was drunk half of the time last year and still make $7,500 so I've got no business here!" With that he quit.

He subsequently took a correspondence art course and learned to organize the things he had been taught over the years into formal presentations.

"Lewis & Clark and Corps of Discovery" by Monte Dolack

This poster was created to celebrate the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery and depicts bear and bison watching the corps float by the White Cliffs of the Missouri River.

A native of Great Falls, Monte Dolack grew up surrounded by the same sweeping vistas and big sky that inspired Charlie Russell. His love of Montana and passion for the West's diverse landscapes and wildlife are evident in the images he creates and the commissions he undertakes.

After studying art at Montana State University and the University of Montana, Monte opened his first studio in 1974, beginning a successful career in fine art and graphics. His best known early works - wild animals wreaking havoc in human homes - comprise his "Invaders Series," exploring the myths of the West and how we view our relationship with our environment.

Andy Thomas, artist, is not only an immensely talented painter, but also a storyteller with the images he creates. His subject matter consists of a variety of images from historical events to intimate moments of everyday life. The artist's desire to create is funneled into the area of painting realism that ranges from a very loose, almost impressionistic style to very tight, realistic depictions. Thomas's medium is primarily oil, but he also works in watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pencil, and ink wash. He is also a very accomplished sculptor.

Primarily self-taught, Thomas began his professional art career in 1991 after sixteen years with a major advertising agency. In his studio, the artist creates his unique paintings that tell their "stories." Thomas says, "I never consciously ponder elements of design or principals of design… I rely on my sketches to refine a value scheme as a starting point. They also help me visualize the completed painting and consider light, painting technique, subject or object importance, and other considerations. The viewer's eye-path is a big influence on the composition at this point and all through the painting process." Thomas's style has been compared to Russell and Remington. He says he has also been influenced by Howard Pyle, Richard Schmid, Norman Rockwell, and others.

A variety of Thomas's historical images have been used in books and featured on book covers. Some paintings have also been featured in numerous magazines. The artist's original works are in many private and corporate collections and also in the permanent collections of museums around the country.

Thomas exhibits in several shows annually, such as the C. M. Russell Art Auction, the Best of the West at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. The artist also enjoys judging art shows and teaching children and adult painting classes. He is a talented writer and published a book containing over 100 color images of his work, along with stories written by him.

The artist is a member of the famed Salmagundi Club in New York, The Portrait Society of America, and other art organizations. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Missouri Southern State University with a BS in Marketing Management.

Cari Bowers is a local artist, calling The Flathead Valley her home for the last 30 years. Originally from Georgia, Cari began capturing life through her 110-camera lens in the 1st grade. Her love of photography flourished once she discovered Montana, particularly Glacier National Park. Cari has salvaged and repaired over 600 windows from landfills over the last 20 years and has used them as a unique way to display her photographs. The first 250 windows that she salvaged and sold were out of Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier, Montana. The window currently up for auction was off a National Park Service cabin on the westside of Glacier Park along Going to the Sun Road.

Tabby Ivy's journey to creative expression started gradually, and later in life. An avid black and white photographer, she completed the Rocky Mountain School of Photography's Summer Intensive Program in Missoula, after moving to Montana in 1991. The tonal aspects of black and white photography still influence her work, informing her tonalist-leaning style of painting.

The need to expand her artistic vision led her first to watercolor and then to oils after studying the work of classical and contemporary artists. She has been painting in oils for over twenty-five years, with collectors across the US.

After thirty-three years in Montana she now calls Carlton, Oregon, home.

Creative Statement

My paintings often begin when a mood, scene or thought breaks through the everyday to spark an idea or call to creative action. I rely on intuitive spontaneity, curiosity and risk taking to guide me through the painting process. My work is not a literal depiction of a landscape, scene or subject. I purposely strive for my paintings to be evocative and engaging while leaving a bit of mystery and interpretation for the viewer. After thirty-three years in Montana, I now make Carlton, Oregon, home, but the vast Montana landscape will always hold a very special place in my heart and in my work.

"Leaves and Shadow" was painted en plein air in Glacier National Park. While driving near Two Medicine I was looking for a grand vista to paint. However, what I was drawn to was a quiet moment along the side of the road; of shaded trees, the smell of damp leaves and the textures within muted shadows. This painting was the result.

ART TALK MAGAZINE, December 1989: Bye Bitney, one of the hottest young artists in the traditional world.Often called 'the young genius', Bye Bitney makes his home on the west shore of Flathead Lake in Kalispell, Montana where he completed his three story home/studio in 1993. After he made the decision to become a professional artist, it took very little time for his work to gain notice in the art world.

Bye began showing in major galleries at the age of 22. Art critics praised both his keen draftsman's eye and expert use of muted colors, and his career has been on the rise ever since. In a region where the majority of artwork depicts cowboys and ranch life, Bye's still lifes, landscapes and portraits are a bold departure. Although he resists categorization of any kind, Bye acknowledges that he is not a cowboy artist. "I'm a western artist because I live in the West. But definitions of western and cowboy art are subject to many different interpretations." Many subjects appear in Bye's paintings, including ocean and sky, people and animals, flowers and still life - all beginning with a visual treat, a moment experienced either in the studio, on a drive through the mountains or from his trip to Spain and Portugal.

Unless he's planning a very complex subject, Bye rarely blocks anything on canvas. To that end, he almost studiously avoids any hard preconceptions of how a painting will turn out. "I start off with a very general idea because it's much less stressful to keep the initial concepts vague and have it evolve from the process "Bye's painting schedule is not a conventional one. He can often be found fine tuning a painting a month after he started it. In the meantime, he sometimes has up to a dozen other paintings in the works.

Bye has been mostly influenced through his studies of the interpretive realism of Delbert Gish, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and Nicolai Fechin. Of Fechin's work Bye notes, "There are a lot of loose abstract passages in his paintings, but his craftsmanship is impeccable. I find this genre painting to be a challenge because inherent looseness gives an artist room to flow with whatever happens on the canvas."Bye's paintings continue to receive rave reviews, but modesty prevents him from dwelling too long on the subject. Gazing over a mug of tea cradled in his hands, Bye Bitney comes as close as he ever will to blowing his own horn."All of my works seem to sell equally well," he says quietly. "That's reassuring.".
