On Ruffed Lemur Island you can usually spot a couple of the ruffed lemurs basking on the edge of their island catching some rays, or hanging out in the trees. These inquisitive individuals were more than happy to lend a helping hand and create a unique work of art. Black-and-white ruffed and red ruffed lemurs are native to only Madagascar and are critically endangered.

Pancake and Waffle, mountain coatis, are a little over eight years old and are sisters. They used their paws and tails to create these masterpieces. Bruce Quillis is a four-year-old African Crested Porcupine. Some of his favorite pastimes include taking long naps in his house, hanging out with his keepers during his keeper chats, and chowing down on a sweet potato. When he isn't working on his beauty sleep, he enjoys going out on adventures and meeting some of his adoring fans or creating beautiful works of art with his feet. One of Bruce Quillis' favorite facts about African Crested Porcupines, is that they have specialized quills made to rattle so they can warn predators to stay away.

Miniature donkeys are native to the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia. They are intelligent, social, and cautious animals and are known for their louding braying noises.

Artist Bio:

Chucky is approximately 11 feet long and weighing in over 1,000 lbs. He is expected to be in his mid-forties.

Chucky caused quite the stir in 2004 after Hurricane Ivan after he "escaped" (floated out of) his enclosure at the zoo's old location, but thankfully, he was found safe and sound and had never left zoo property.

American alligators can be found in slow-moving freshwater rivers but also inhabit swamps, marshes, and lakes. Alligators are considered a keystone species because of their impact on their environment and the other species that call these areas home. These holes are left behind by the alligator and later fill with freshwater and are used by other species for breeding and drinking.

As one of our Animal Ambassadors, Petal can be seen at our educational programs, both at the zoo and off-site at special events.

Petal came to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo earlier this year after being rescued in Florida. During her rehabilitation, she underwent a tail amputation and was deemed non-releasable, resulting in her needing a forever home, and AGCZ was able to step in and become her forever home.

Virginia Opossums are the only living marsupial native to North America and have the most teeth of any land mammal! Opossums are nocturnal and often sleep in dens made by other animals. While they do not hibernate, cold temperatures can cause opossums to nest for several days to reduce their energy use.

Petal is very inquisitive and loves eating worms. She enjoys spending time with her keepers and can often be found snuggling in one of her favorite donated blankets!
