Your group of six will spend a week in Rome this fall, with three days dedicated to an inspiring, off-the-beaten-path tour curated by Fenwick's architect Matt McNicholas, AIA '96 and his wife, Elizabeth McNicholas, AIA. Fixtures in Chicago's Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, Matt and Elizabeth are classically-trained architects, owners of the firm behind the Fenwick's Master Plan and true Romanophiles, having lived in Rome and returned to visit nearly every year for two decades. This is their city and they will show you a side of Rome most tourists never see.

Your group will embark on a three-day tour of the Centro offering an engaging and informative look into the magnificent art and architecture that came out of the Baroque-era rivalry between sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and architect Francesco Borromini. Rome's greatest Dominican churches will also be highlighted. You will dine at unique spots such as a small, family-owned restaurant that serves elevated Roman cuisine. (One dish uses the recipe of Julius Caesar's personal chef!) You'll also be welcomed into the family's wine cellar that is older than the Colosseum itself and contains delicious wine and rich stories of ancient art.

Some other highlights of your tour can include:

  • Campo de' Fiori- The "Field of Flowers," once the site of many public executions is now a daily market
  • Bernini's Piazza San Pietro and Ponte Sant'Angelo
  • The Old Papal Way where you can walk some of the processional path from the Vatican to St. John Lateran traditionally taken by the new Pope
  • Borromini's churches Sant'Agnese in Agone, Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza and Chiesa Nuova
  • Other Baroque churches such as San Pietro and Sant'Andrea della Valle, and the Dominican churches Santa Maria Sopra Minerva and Santa Sabina, the main church of the Dominican Order
  • The Galleria Borghese museum where many of Bernini's most famous marble statues are located - all of them completed before he was 28 years old
  • Janiculum Hill for breathtaking views of the Eternal City

Each aspect of the tour is tailored to your curiosities and interests making this Roman holiday a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won't soon forget.
