High West Midwinters Night Dram

From: The Bourbon Jedi

Act 5 Scene 4

I have been chasing this particular expression for a long time. After I quit looking for it I ended up stumbling onto a bottle last week-isn't that how it always works. A Midwinter Night's Dram is a blend of three ryes that, according to High West, have been aged betwixt 5-20 years. That rye is then finished in French oak and used port barrels.

A Midwinter Night's Dram

Color: Mahogany

Nose: A fruity, floral scent greets you dominated by cherries and roses with hints of potpourri, berries, molasses, and skosh of vanilla. Absolutely delightful.

Taste: Dried fruit medley-raisins, apricots, cherries-along with herbs and at the end the rye spiciness. The taste is fruit forward and the normal rye bite is considerably subdued right up until the end when it gives you a good zing.

Finish: There's a quick burst of rye spiciness followed by a plum dryness from the port. It's an odd combination that makes the whole experience somewhat schizophrenic. That's not a to say it's bad but a bit challenging. The blend of young and old ryes is exquisite and neither overpower you palate but along with the port finish there are multiple layers of complexity for your enjoyment.

Verdict: A-

It's a fun, easy drink and I can't wait to enjoy it in the winter around a nice fire. Like all High West limited releases it'll cost you a premium but I think it's well worth it, not just for those who like whiskey either; if you enjoy a well-crafted spirit chances are you will enjoy this.
