Wence, Sandra, and Malena Martinez
Buffalo Robe Central Gold, 2018
Hand-spun, hand-dyed wool
63 x 31 inches

Le Corbusier once called tapestries "nomadic murals" for their portability and ability to serve as a rug or wall hanging. Door County duo Wence and Sandra Martinez create distinctive tapestries influenced by nineteenth century Symbolism and the tribal patterns of pre-Colombian Zapotec civilization. Inspired by traditional beaded buffalo hides, Buffalo Robe Central Gold is from the Martinez's buffalo robe series, one of which has a home in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
