Realist painter and sculptor James Van Nuys captures a rustic scene in one of the small forgotten prairie towns that dot the map of western South Dakota. Van Nuys was born in Whittier, California, in 1955 and has lived intermittently in Rapid City, South Dakota, for most of his life. He attended Wilmington College in Ohio, graduating in 1978 with a double major in art and music. Returning to the Black Hills in 1982, he began to apply his formidable rendering skills to the landscape that he loves: the Black Hills and the Badlands of South Dakota. Frame measures 17" x 21.5".
This framed and matted 1987 watercolor by Heinbaugh was inspired by a photo at the State Historical Society of North Dakota. It features the steamboat Eclipse loading passengers in Bismarck, North Dakota. The Eclipse, a sternwheel packet with a wood hull, was built in California, Pa., in 1878. In all she made 11 trips to Fort Benton between 1878-1887. She was the flagship of a fleet of steamboats in 1881 carrying several thousand Native Americans from the Yellowstone to agencies in the Dakotas. Last owned by Montana Transportation Co., Capt. Isaac P. Baker, master. She was fatally snagged 15 miles below Sioux City, Iowa, on Sept. 3, 1887. Frame measures 16.5" x 10.5".
