An original creation of horticultural art all created locally in the Milwaukee area by Michael Yanny. All the plants were developed in this area for our climate. Ed Gartner' was selected in 1995 by Michael Yanny from a remnant native population growing on the property of Ed Gartmann in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Somehow the name got misspelled along the way and the plant became 'Ed Gartner' instead of 'Ed Gartmann'. The misspelled version is the correct name for now.
The tree is a standard sized Acer x freemanii with the typical vigorous growth rate. It has excellent tolerance of alkaline soils and has a dense habit. The plant is fast growing, has upright branching and is about twice as tall as it is wide at 15 years of age in Southeastern Wisconsin. Fall color is an orange-red. It is the first of all the common Acer x freemanii cultivars to color. It roots readily from softwood cuttings.
'Ed Gartner' could be very useful for those concerned with having appropriate, Wisconsin ecotype plant material and yet having the predictability of a good cultivar.
