This original painting, "The Three Umbrellas" (1957), is by Mykola Butovich (1896-1961), the grandfather of CBASO second violinist Nick Butovich. "The Three Umbrellas" is based on a fairytale. It is whimsical, playful, and foreboding, all things a good fairytale should be. "The Three Umbrellas" is proudly featured in full color on p. 277 of Oleksandr Fedoruk's biography of the artist, Mykola Butovych: Life and Artwork, (M.P. Kots', Kyiv/New York, 2002). The piece is exquisitely and professionally framed.
Butovich is a prominent figure of 20th century Ukrainian art whose work was profoundly influenced by modern Ukrainian culture. He was a modern artist who favored expressionism, surrealism, neo-primitivism, and the non-figurative. Born near Poltava, Ukraine, he studied art in Prague, Berlin, and Leipzig. Butovich despised amateur kitsch and was convinced that the pursuit of pseudo folk art marred professional art. His work is in museums and private collections throughout the world. He emigrated to the United States in 1948. Gouache on paper, 5x6.25. In Nick Butovich's private collection.
