Sixth through 8th graders in our YESS program begin middle school significantly behind their peers - 20 points in science, 34 points in math, and 43 points in reading. With support from a team of staff, volunteers, teachers, and parents - and with help from generous donors - they successfully transition to high school. Three students were so successful that they are Schuler Scholars at Highland Park High School. $375.00 provides one middle school student with a full quarter of YESS programming.

Nuestro Center After-School Homework Club serves at-risk students from Oak Terrace Elementary School. Oak Terrace has the most low-income students (73%), lowest ISAT scores (56%), and highest percentage of English-language learners (57%) of all District 112 elementary schools. Homework Club helps ensure that students, supported by their families, succeed in primary grades and prepare for a successful transition to middle school. $500.00 covers all costs associated with tutoring one student for an entire school semester.

One in five American adults faces a mental health issue, and 20 percent of all adolescents struggle with mental health needs. Our licensed therapists provide individual and family counseling, as well as bilingual counseling to help improve the quality of life and well being of area residents. A donation of $150.00 provides two one-hour counseling sessions to a individual or family in need.

Send a Kid to Camp

Nuestro Verano Camp provides a safe summer environment for children who might otherwise be left alone or with older siblings or elderly relatives while parents work. It reinforces educational gains made during the school year with a summer reading program and fun STEM activities. Campers enjoy nutritious meals, exercise, and outdoor adventures at local parks and swim facilities. Cultural enrichment trips provide horizon-broadening experiences similar to those enjoyed by their peers in the broader community. $150.00 sends one kid to camp.

Lake County's senior population is expected to grow 20 percent by 2020. Our therapists and advocates help seniors and their families address the unique challenges of aging, working together to maintain independence and manage stress. $125.00 provides two counseling sessions.

Students in our Latino Youth Initiative (LYI) at Highland Park High School dream of and work hard to be the first in their families to go to college. The college visits so common for students at North Shore high schools are made possible for LYI students by the bus trips we provide for visits to area colleges and universities. $50.00 provides four (4) students with a college trip experience.

Many English Learners cannot attend regular ESL classes. Volunteer tutors help these students learn English after work. They meet at home or at a convenient location. With funding for more books, more students can join the program. $30.00 buys books for one Escuela en Casa student.
