ARCHITECTURE/ENGINEERING ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Over the course of the week, the student will be exposed to key elements of the design process from a variety of perspectives, including field surveys, client design meetings, architectural review, engineering (mechanical and electrical) review and overall project management. The student will shadow members of the Bancroft-AE design team in meetings and in the field interacting with clients and end-users (i.e. patients and scientists). The internship is intended to give students with an interest in pursuing careers as architects and/or engineers the opportunity to immerse in the working environment of an active design firm. The objective is for students to have a better sense of the daily expectations of professionals in these fields, while encouraging them to pursue formal education as engineers and architects. Some of our local sites may be a bit of a challenge for a person with disabilities. ABOUT BANCROFT ARCHITECTS + ENGINEERS Bancroft Architects + Engineers is a full-service design firm with 38 full-time architects and engineers working from its headquarters in Elk Grove Village and six studios nationwide. Paul Jenkins '81 serves as the President and CEO. Though Bancroft designs a broad range of commercial, educational and industrial facilities, its focus is the design of highly-technical facilities in support of healthcare and the sciences. Recently completed technical projects include the design of the $30 million renovation of the laboratories at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the design for the renovation of Northwestern's Applied Physics Laboratory for particle acceleration research and the design of the Saudi Royal family's mobile medical facility. As a firm founded and led by disabled veterans, Bancroft-AE commits significant resources to designing leading-edge facilities for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA is Bancroft's largest client and at present it has ongoing VA Medical Center design projects in nine states including Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois.

INTERIOR DESIGN/ARCHITECTURE ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY This week-long educational opportunity will be an experience filled with everyday professional tasks in the fields of architecture and design. CRIMINAL JUSTICE/GOVERNMENT ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Learn what it takes to fight crime in Cook County directly from State's Attorney Anita Alvarez. Your student will spend five days observing and shadowing in her office-the second largest prosecutor's office in the nation-with experienced and seasoned assistant state's attorneys. ABOUT THE STATE'S ATTORNEY State's Attorney Alvarez along with her Assistant State's Attorneys work hard each day to secure justice for crime victims and to serve as the legal representatives of the nation's second largest county. With nearly 900 attorneys, her office has the responsibility to prosecute all misdemeanor and felony crimes committed in Cook County and to promote civil protection for the disabled, the elderly and consumers.

GRAPHIC DESIGN ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY During his or her week at Damen Jackson, your student will participate in developing marketing and design solutions for actual clients. The student will shadow Damen Jackson's designer team as well as account executives and copywriters. Your student's work will be reviewed by the team and will receive constructive feedback. The work created is the student's to keep, which may prove helpful with college applications. Additionally, the student will receive a letter of recommendation from Ron Farnum, founder and president of the agency. ABOUT DAMEN JACKSON Damen Jackson is a creative agency focused on brand marketing communication and design. Working with many different types of companies, Damen Jackson develops products and creative campaigns, building exceptional brands. Clients include Disney, Seattle's Best, Fisher Nuts, Harris Theatre, DuPont and Fenwick High School.

GOVERNMENT ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The internship is with DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin '77 and will include the opportunity to observe and learn about the operations of county government departments, programs and services. DuPage County is the second largest county in Illinois with 932,126 residents and is a major employment center for northeastern Illinois, home to over 750,000 jobs, 16 colleges, seven hospitals, two national laboratories and 300 miles of trails and bikeways. The student will have the opportunity to attend county committee meetings, a county board session, tour county facilities and meet with county elected officials and senior staff. ABOUT THE DUPAGE COUNTY BOARD CHAIRMAN The County Board Chairman is the chief executive officer of the County Board, supervising the implementation of the Board's policies and programs. Dan Cronin won election to the office of County Board Chairman, first in November of 2010 and again in November of 2014, after serving in the Illinois General Assembly for 20 years. Chairman Cronin is committed to the ACT (Accountability, Consolidation & Transparency) Initiative to reduce the size, scope and cost of local government. To date, the reform measures under the ACT program have saved taxpayers over $100 million.

SERVICE ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Camp FRIENDship is a day camp designed to help children with autism spectrum disorders and similar social skills deficits acquire social skills within a positive, safe and fun learning environment. Typically developing peers are incorporated into camp programming to increase social opportunities across camp groups. For the 2nd year, Camp FRIENDship will be held at the Chicago Therapeutic School location June 27 through July 1, 2016. The student should be interested in working with people with disabilities but are not required to have any experience. He or she will assist the counselors and assistant counselors in supporting the needs of all campers. Camp activities will include social skills instruction, large group games, art, cooking, science and more. TELEVISION/MEDIA ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY If your Friar is interested in the media and news, NBC5 has the perfect shadow experience. Spend five days at the NBC5 studios seeing what happens behind the scenes. The student will have the opportunity to spend time with current Fenwick parent and NBC5 News Today Weekday Edition co-anchor Zoraida Sambolin. He or she will be able to observe all of the facets of the station, from video and writing to reporting and producing. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the news as it happens. ABOUT NBC5 CHICAGO AND MS. SAMBOLIN NBC5 (WMAQ-TV) is owned by NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations subsidiary of NBCUniversal, and is part of a duopoly with Telemundo station WSNS-TV. It is also co-owned with regional sports network Comcast SportsNet Chicago. WMAQ-TV maintains studio facilities and business offices at the NBC Tower on North Columbus Drive in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood and its transmitter is located atop the Willis Tower. Zoraida Sambolin is the Weekday Edition co-anchor of NBC5 News Today. The morning news anchor originally joined WMAQ-TV in the summer of 2002 and began reporting for Telemundo the following year. As the first Chicago on-air broadcaster to work at both English and Spanish language stations simultaneously, she has broken new ground for Latinos in the number three market in the country. Before joining NBC5, Ms. Sambolin was the creator and Emmy award-winning host of Small Talk for Parents on WYCC-TV and Nuestros Ninos on WSNS-TV from 1999 to 2002. Prior to that, she was the director of broadcasting for the Chicago City Colleges. Ms. Sambolin is committed to helping Autism Speaks raise awareness and has volunteered her time and talents to the cause. She has also volunteered her time for a number of Chicago-area organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, Gilda's Club Chicago and the Puerto Rican Alliance where she serves on an Advisory Board.

LAW ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The student will accompany the firm's partner Mr. Antonio Romanucci '78 to court, to depositions or to various meetings that may be on the schedule for that particular week. MEDICINE ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The internship is with the Rush Epilepsy Center and will include the opportunity to observe and view firsthand the physician/patient relationship in a clinical setting. Rush Epilepsy Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy. The student will have the opportunity to attend lectures and meet with the entire staff to discuss the overview of the work conducted at the Center with patients. The student will learn about the medical condition, how a diagnosis is made, what treatment options are available and the Center's work. ABOUT THE CENTER AND THE DIRECTOR Rush Epilepsy Center is one of the oldest established subspecialty practices in Chicagoland for patients with epilepsy. There are trained and certified epileptologists in the practice who work on a team with nurse practitioners, clinical nurses, research PhDs, certified medical assistants, a social worker and administrative staff who all play roles in the evaluation and treatment approaches to our patients with epilepsy. The Center offers innovative treatment plans including VNS placement and Neuropace. It provides video-EEG monitoring studies and perform surgery on patients for whom this treatment will be beneficial. Dr. Michael Smith is the Director of the Rush Epilepsy Center. He is a professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences and a senior attending physician. Under his leadership, the Center has grown since its beginnings in 1972 under the leadership of Dr. Frank Morrell. Dr. Smith is an advocate for patients with epilepsy, highly respected in the neuroscience community and has done numerous talks throughout his career. He has also authored and co-authored books and articles in medical journals. RESTRICTION: Student must be at least 17 years old to participate.

BANKING/BUSINESS ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Your student will spend a week working in The PrivateBank's Strategy Department with Chief Strategy Officer John Heiberger '88. The student will learn about the structure, scope and inner-workings of a mid-size financial services firm, the role of strategy in the modern corporate structure, the framework, research and analysis needed for the completion/execution of a project plan, and demands and opportunities of working for a public company. ABOUT THE PRIVATEBANK The PrivateBank is a $17.3 billion Chicago-based commercial bank. It is one of the 50 largest commercial banks in the United States with 35 offices in 10 states.

TELEVISION/MEDIA ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY The student will shadow three of our employees including Fenwick's own Dana Ballard '96, producer; Cortney Hall '99, anchor; and Natalie Skryd '10, floor director. He or she will learn different aspects of what it's like to put on a newscast by having the opportunity to work on the morning, midday and evening shows. By shadowing these three employees, the student get a complete understanding of what it's like behind the scenes in the studio and in the newsroom. ABOUT WGN-TV WGN-TV debuted its first broadcast in 1948 on Channel 9 in Chicago from its studios at Tribune Tower. Since 1961 WGN has been broadcasting from 2501 W. Bradley Place on Chicago's northwest side. The morning show runs from 4-10 a.m., the midday show from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and the evening shows from 4-6 p.m. and 9-11 p.m. RESTRICTION: Student must be an incoming junior this summer to participate.
