Are you interested in learning the basics of beekeeping, starting with the purchase of equipment and livestock (bees), to year round care and extracting honey? Bretta Chaplinski (Ms. Chaplinski), 7th grade science teacher at Stillwater Jr. High), a hobby beekeeper for the last 10 years, would love to share her knowledge of Apis mellifera, the honey bee, with you. You can choose one of 2 options.
1. You want bees this year! Bretta will go with you to purchase the equipment and the bees. Bretta would mentor you for your first year as a beekeeper. The University of MN offers this mentoring service for $875/hive.
2. You want to learn about bees and are considering becoming a hobby beekeeper. Ok, in that case, you can accompany Bretta to one of her hives to do the necessary work to keep the hive alive and healthy and maybe get some honey. Activities range from putting a new package of bees in the hive to honey extraction.
In addition, Bretta also has substantial knowledge of native plants that pollinators love and could advise you regarding planting for pollinators.
