Stillwater Area High School biology teacher Andy Weaver will take your crew of 10 on a bird-banding experience this Spring, plus a tour of the peregrine falcon breeding center in the high school. It is the only high-school-based falcon breeding program in the world.
Andy is a Master Falconer and a nationally known expert on falcon breeding, and this is a one-of-a-kind experience to learn from such a knowledgeable and likable guy.
Bird banding happens in the spring, when millions of songbirds migrate through Stillwater hoping to find a mate somewhere north. Bird banding is one way humans can see this up close. The high school holds a master banding permit allowing Andy and his colleagues to set mist nets to catch and band these wonderful warblers, sparrows and other migrants.
You'll join Andy on an early Saturday morning banding outing in the high school's Environmental Learning Center to see what what can be captured in the nets. After that is a tour of the falcon breeding project. Learning isn't always this much fun.
