8 Watchers
This is a pair of male and female Bison that are about 12 months old and weigh approximately 400-500 pounds. They have recently been vaccinated and dewormed. There exists no documentation for Bison lineage, but these are believed to have descended from the Southern herd that Charles Goodnight saved in 1878.
The story of the near-extinction of the American Bison is well known. There were two genetically similar but different herds in North America-the Northern herd and the Southern herd. Goodnight captured about 40 Bison of the Southern herd and kept them on his ranch in the Texas Panhandle. These were the only bison from the Southern herd left at that time. The Goodnight herd still roams in Armstrong County.
The Hevenors are active in the Texas Bison Association and the National Bison Association, traveling to conferences and meeting with other breeders. Their herd numbers over 40 Bison, up from 16 in 2019.
