Emma Covill graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the University of Montana. She makes functional ceramic work, and work in photography, graphic design, and painting. She was a Community Resident at The Clay Studio of Missoula in September 2020

I am inspired by color and my surroundings and aim to capture the feelings and memories associated with time and place. I often use buildings, plants, furniture, and other potentially overlooked details of the everyday to create patterns or fictional environments. As I illustrate my forms, I think of the emotions I feel when I look at the sunset, sunlight and shadows dancing on front porches, or fresh spring blooms. I recall the temperature and smells of a slight breeze by the river and breathe it in.

My work, to me, is very nostalgic, reminiscing on past travels, places I used to call home, and overall pleasant eras in my life. For others the colors and images are comforting and joyful. I hope my work inspires the viewer to be adventurous, explore, and to enjoy the little things a little bit more.

When I am not making art or jewelry, I prefer to be laying by the water, playing sports, picking berries, learning a new language, or sipping on a margarita.
