What is the MiraCosta College Umoja Program?

The Umoja Community at MiraCosta College is a program designed to assist African American and other historically underrepresented students who desire to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, and earn their degrees. Through Umoja, students can prepare for transfer while taking culturally relevant coursework and participate in enriching activities with students who share similar goals. We are part of the statewide Umoja Community

Mission Statement

Umoja, (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success.
