Jim Hayes
Meritorious Service
Jim Hayes grew up in Wheaton, Maryland, and attended Good Counsel High School, where his passion for athletics first took root. He went on to play college football and earned his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Montana State University Billings. In August 1972, Jim began his teaching career at Bishop O'Connell High School, where he would become a beloved and influential figure for decades.
At DJO, Coach Hayes taught freshman boys Health and P.E. and led a popular coed elective in strength training, emphasizing the lifelong benefits of fitness and weightlifting. He coached varsity football, boys' and girls' field events in track and field, and oversaw strength and conditioning in the weight room-a place where his mentorship made a lasting impact on countless students.
Coach Hayes was deeply committed to building confidence in his students and athletes. He challenged them to think creatively, push beyond their comfort zones, and discover talents they didn't know they had. Always a champion of student initiative, he served as moderator for several student-created clubs, including the weightlifting club, car club, and ecology club.
It was through coaching that Jim met his future wife, Kathy (DJO Class of '72), when he coached her brother Jeff and his teammates (DJO Class of '75). Their legacy at O'Connell continued through extended family and friends-and most meaningfully, their daughter Breanne, DJO Class of 2011.
Jim's unwavering dedication to Bishop O'Connell's students, athletes, and school community is reflected in this well-deserved honor, recognizing a lifetime of service, mentorship, and heart.
