St. John's University: Master of Business Administration (Finance), Class of 2005

In 2024, Lisa R. Chase established the Christopher J. Tobin Endowed Scholarship with the Kingsborough Community College Foundation. Beginning in 2025, this endowment will provide generous financial support to talented, hardworking KCC Media Arts students, who aspire to careers in broadcast engineering and telecommunications. In addition to receiving scholarship monies, the students will be connected to mentors from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Lisa's former husband and KCC alumnus Christopher J. Tobin, who she met while working at WNEW 102.7FM in NYC, credited his love of the broadcasting industry with working at Radio Shack and KCC's radio station, WKRB. At ABC Radio Network, he developed a broad portfolio of broadcasting skills and an equal passion for mentoring budding broadcasters and engineers. He volunteered his time at WKRB and other college radio stations and was one of the world's pioneers of audio over IP (AoIP) codecs that enabled on-site newsgathering from anywhere with a wireless connection. Chris was promoted to Chief Technology Officer at WBGO in Newark, NJ and co-host of TWIRT ("This Week in Radio Tech") when he passed in December 2020. In 2021, he was posthumously bestowed with the national Robert W. Flanders SBE Engineer of the Year Award.

Just as Chris found joy and purpose in mentoring KCC students, his scholarship will open doors for new generations of kindred spirits. Thanks to Lisa's generous endowment, KCC students will not only receive much-needed financial support, but guidance and opportunities as well.
