What is Glenwood?
Glenwood is a nonprofit agency dedicated to serving children, adolescents and adults with autism and other behavioral health needs. Founded in Birmingham, Alabama, Glenwood has spent the last 50 years fulfilling its mission to help individuals live life to their fullest potential. Through more than 40 programs and services, Glenwood continues to evolve to meet a wide variety of autism and behavioral health needs. From assessments and therapy to community programs, residential homes and educational training, we empower families and support the futures of their loved ones. Today, Glenwood reaches more than 10,000 families each year.

Why support Glenwood?
Early in Glenwood's history, autism affected 1 in 10,000 children. Today, that rate has increased to 1 in 36, with 1 in 6 children being diagnosed with a mental disorder. Those children grow up to be adults and while symptoms may be subject to classification, people are not. At Glenwood, each person is treated as an individual. Evidence-based services and treatment are prescribed by professional staff who creatively tailor programs to enhance each person's opportunities for success. Glenwood guides families on a progressive path to support, hope and brighter futures for those with autism or behavioral health needs.

How does the luncheon support adults with autism?

Adult Residential Program: Glenwood's adult residential program provides homes for adults 19 and older with autism or other behavioral health needs. Rooted in community and compassion, the program offers opportunities to develop social, communication and vocational skills through Glenwood's day programs. Each home features private bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, communal living spaces, and areas for private visits with family and friends. This program provides access to many amenities, including a lake, fishing pond, swimming pool, gymnasium, hiking trails and art classes.

Adult Day Programs: Our adult day programs create a supportive community for adults with autism and other behavioral health needs, offering individualized programming that develop social skills, independent living abilities, health and fitness, vocational training and artistic pursuits. Participants engage in meaningful, real-world experiences through programs like Journey Academy, gaining hands-on vocational skills both on-site and in the community. The Sullivan Center, located on our Sicard Hollow campus, supports Glenwood residents in building independence, improving communication and fostering meaningful community connections.

Community Experience Program: Glenwood's Community Experience Program encourages adults to engage actively in the community, fostering social skills, employment opportunities and valuable partnerships. We provide transportation, staff assistance and membership opportunities for adults to volunteer, build job skills and enjoy area activities like bowling, museum visits, movies and more.

Community Referrals Program: Each year, Glenwood receives hundreds of calls and emails from individuals seeking guidance on autism and other behavioral conditions. Our intake coordinator assesses each need to provide placement within Glenwood's services, adds individuals to our waiting list or connects them with additional community resources.
