Rob Brown, 2024 Fred and Nancy DeMatteis Award Recipient

Many foster care youth are left on their own once they age out of care at 18. They may not have a home to come back to if their space has been filled by other children who need it. Heartshare St. Vincent's is dedicated to youth beyond the young age of 18. I benefitted greatly from this continuing care and support after 18. It was only possible due to the kindness and generosity of others. Read below to learn more and donate to our cause.

About HeartShare St. Vincent's Services

For over 150 years, HeartShare St. Vincent's Services has been a symbol of hope, compassion, and strength for the vulnerable, under-resourced and underestimated communities across New York City. Each year we provide a continuum of service and support to over 6,000 children, youth, and families dealing with trauma related to family separation, poverty, domestic violence, and mental illness. We advocate, we adapt and we advance. So that those we support can do the same.

We rely on private support to go beyond the basics. Every youth in care deserves safety and stability, but we also believe that they deserve more: access to higher education, meaningful work opportunities, dreams that beget more dreams. Because of private support, our American Dream Program, a research-based, youth-centered coaching model, has been able to flip educational outcomes for our youth, jumpstarting new futures.

In New York City, less than 25% of students in foster care graduate from high school. In 2023, 92% of our youth-when paired with coaches-graduated from high school. Nationally, less than 4% of students in foster care graduate from college. Our data also shows that 72% of college-aged students in foster care with HeartShare St. Vincent's are enrolled in college or vocational programs, with a persistence rate of 82%. These scholars are shattering stereotypes and societal expectations by even stepping foot onto a college campus.
