H.E. Graça Machel
Former First Lady of South Africa and Mozambique, Nelson Mandela's widow, Chair of the Board of the Graca Machel Trust
Graça Machel is a renowned humanitarian, advocate for women's and children's rights, and former First Lady of both Mozambique and South Africa. Born on October 17, 1945, in Mozambique, she has dedicated her life to promoting social justice and equality, particularly in African countries. As a matter of fact, in 1997 she was made an honorary Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for her humanitarian work. Additionally, she is the widow of former President of Mozambique Samora Machel (1975-1986) and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela (1998-2013).
Furthermore, Graça Machel served as Mozambique's Minister of Education and Culture and played a pivotal role in improving literacy and educational opportunities in her country. Through her work with the Graça Machel Trust and numerous international organizations, she continues to champion the causes of education, health, and women's empowerment across the globe.
